My daughter st Redcliffe has been getting 60kph winds and solid rain for hours now, there's some heavy stuff keeps building up well offshore and hammering the nthn suburbs of Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Sam, looking at the radar even now (4.30am) its interesting that the bulk of the rain is remaining quite coastal..its such a strange system..

This from Nitso at Weather IQ(formally Oz Cyclone Chasers explaining why the Low was so windy...

"Ex-Alfred may be much weaker tonight compared to earlier, but it's creating way worse winds for Brissy. So it’s still a fascinating science story. The system is squeezed between a southern ridge and the remains of its own circulation, causing a switch from the typical land breezes of Alfred last night to full-onshore easterly winds. In essence, the pressure gradient is pulling those winds straight off the ocean. With Bribie, Moreton and Stradbroke Islands acting as funnels, the bayside suburbs are now experiencing gusts that the models predicted up to 55 knots!!! that's about the strongest winds the system ever produced as a TC last night —While these winds will moderate a little after midnight, they'll still peak at 35-40 knots with squally showers along the coast.

Science at work in real-time - it's fascinating stuff."

Yes it's interesting but my daughter didn't think so, she had 40 knots us most of the night with at times heavy rain where as we just got a bit of a breeze around 15 knots gusting to 20 knots and intermittent rain. Hervey Bay is currently getting quite a heavy storm but there's not much between them and us.
Flooding and power outages are happening at Redcliffe, Caboolture. Deception Bay, Elimbah etc so Fat Albert (that should have been his name) still is causing issues.

I've got plenty of sand bags and thought of top dressing the lawn as a bit of good rain will level it out but not if it comes down too heavy.

Submerged hazards will be the issue as last time the new bar opened up here you couldn't move at any speed as you'd hit something which even at 6knots we managed with someone on the bow watching.

I'm having a break as the breeze and rain has picked up here, I've checked on a lot of the elderly residents around here and a couple of young families to make sure they're OK, one did have some leakage starting as the rain coming in at an angle but all sorted now.

This raises another issue of how selfish some people are, I saw wind surfers out and apart from there being a Maritime ban on them being on the water if something happens to them they endanger others trying to rescue them. If they've got that much energy maybe they should look at going out and helping others.
Rant over, need to have a coffee break.

Well it was a wild ride last night.
Went for a 5.30am drive this morning from Petrie, thru Redcliffe, Sandgate, Deagon, Pinkenba, Nudgee and back to Petrie to assess.....a lot of tree damage and quite a lot of tipped over big trees amongst them.
Lots of downed lines that I saw, i presume countless thousands I did not see.
Structural damages were not too numerous without tree damage.

Will take best part of a month to clean it up I think.

Just beware, I noticed several navigation bouys were missing off Margate Beach, 1 out of 4 remain.....I suspect there will be many others missing in SEQ too.

Water was very rough at Redcliffe, very dirty but no debris or weed then...likely will change with the flood waters.

It will give those marine workers something to do other than changing light bulbs on the beacons and if they broke the moorings it was time for new ones .

Well the wind part of the system was a total fizzer but it seems the rain hasnt missed you Brissie fellas..

Since Cyclone jasper in december 23 most of these systems have had little cyclonic winds to them but the issue has been the rain depression converging on a coastal area and remaining relatively stationary with bucketloads of rain...hopefully this system moves oin as forecast and you dont end up with the biblical rainfalls of 2000 + mm in a 4-5 day period that Cairnsand Townville regions saw during jasper and the recent FNQ flooding events...

I do see Springbrook total of over 1100mm and 500-800mm generally over the whole of coastal SE Qld in the past 5 days so the amount of flooding is really no surprise...hope its eases up today for you guys...what a mess..!..

has anyone here had any flooding of there house or property..?

A few things have come out of this event. The lack of back up when mobile towers lose power ( believe the batterys only last 3 hours.) If your home phone hangs off NBN and you lose power no phone. Or area in Redland Bay had no power or mobile coverage for 4 days. Reinforces the need for everyone to have a back up source of 240v either an inverter or back up gene.

Yes the new phone modem is a pain I hooks up my 2000watt inverter and kept it on when I lost power to have internet.

The people that make these silly discussions when planning don’t live where these things happen they only get fires mostly but not we’re they live so there ok that’s all they think about.
