    Fingal live bait grounds.

    Morning all,
Been a while since on the chat for various reasons. I am going to start to explore the Offshore Fingal area a bit more in the future. I headed out last weekend for a quick recky, had a snorkel around Cook Island and a quick troll in close which resulted in a nice Cobia to my surprise. I am on a Jetski. I am looking for GPS marks for any live bait grounds in this area. Can anyone help? I live in Byron and due to the harsh Jetski regs, means the closest I can launch to my home is Ballina and head out offshore there but I am keen to expand my horizons so to speak. Happy to take the drive and launch up at Fingal..
    Thanks all,
    Matty.

There's alot of reef around Cook Island. Fidos is all but due east of the island, it breaks so be wary of the bommie. About 2-3 km to the NNE of Cook Is. is a good bait reef. A ledge pops up from 30m to 20m before gently falling back to 25m with lots of rubble. I started out jigging up livies like everyone else heading to the 9 mile system but soon switched to flicking plastics over it. People would pull up there to jig lives and I'd pretend to do the same untill they left. Snagged some good quality snapper, kings and jew from it. Can't help with marks but I'm sure I got it from the fish finder book. It's only about 2nm off the beach and not far from Cook Is. It's a starting point for the area.

Mate used to do that at Murphy's, he'd have a good fish on and just hold the rod down in the water and pretend he was just dropping his line in and as soon as they'd move on he'd haul his fish in.
