That would have to be a very select few, the Matt's from Pelagic Pursuit maybe, that are using $30 soft plastics for Barra. We do a lot of Barra fishing, and nothing we use would ever come close to that cost in a soft plastic. Hardbody, absolutely, but not softies.

Not taking anything away from anyone wanting to make their own, it's the same as when we used to make our own wooden lures and copy the old Nilesmasters for Barra 40 years ago, there is a lot of satisfaction in catching a trophy fish on your own lure.

A 10 inch magdraft is $60 a 6inch magdraft is $30 and that Matt guy throws the big ones and theres a good reason there useing them and if there taking the rigging out and using a osprey rig well that makes them nearly $80 he might be getting mates rates because of who he is but the rest of us that pay full price its $19 for a osprey rig for a 10 inch plastic and $60 for the plastic unless you can make things yourself at a very low price for the plastic and the rig.

What I'm saying is it's a very select few that venture above the normal range of Soft Plastics. I would think that it would be maybe 1 in 10 people we would see in the Barra circles that would regularly use something like the Magdrafts, and even less that would re-rig them with the likes of the Osprey Rigs. There have been a really select few that are using Gancrafts, but you know who they are as they'll have a crowd of people around them.
None of these are set up to be used in timber, or snaggy areas, so are really restricted to the open areas such as the Fitzroy and mouth of the bigger rivers like Sampan, Roper etc, or maybe flats when we're at Hinchinbrook, it's more weedless rigs that are used casting banks or around timber.
I'm not saying they don't have their place, all I'm saying is the average punter isn't out specifically targeting the 120 Barra that these are normally used for. I could see us getting into making vibes, the amount of them we donate to timber, even at the lower cost they are, would make it viable to make our own, or even make some of the plastics we use at the reef, that would be well and truly viable. And as I said before, there is a great feeling of self satisfaction of catching trophy fish on a home made lure.

Yes Corry I no there’s cheaper ones to use but those mag drafts are a little bit more special ,I can see growing trend in the bigger plastics to target the bigger fish in the salt and dams so next time I get to go on a trip I’ll have some large plastics and won’t care if I lose them because I’ve made them cheap.

The bigger the plastic the bigger the rod to cast it and I only plan to make something around 8 inches and 3 ounces at the biggest.

I will knock up some moulds over xmas and then melt down a lot of plastics I will never use again and pour some new things.

Yer he was the guy that did the triple laminate in the link on the other page ive wacthed just about all of his clips and learny heaps from him,his father tought him to make and pour plastics.

I you want some plastic BD customtackle this guy is good real fast postage its only $45 for 2lts plus postage i got 2lt of super soft 2lt med and 2lt of hard the super soft it good for clear coating the medium soft and the hard is the saltwater stuff a bit tougher.

Ok I’ve had a few failures making a hard resin plug to cast with so I’ve tried doing it from a plaster Paris half mold had my first silicon mold not set lesson learnt about mixing silicone.

To fix this I put 2 zip ties on a ally tube put it in a drill problem solved just put the zip ties 180 to each other and cut to cup size

This mold leaked a but so my next mold I’ll do a half and cut a key in it all the way around it’s just part of the learning curve of mold making.

I can use the same plaster mold to do my next mold and this silicon mold I’m going to shrink it by mixing 50% white spirits with the silicon once the spirits flash off the mold will have shrunk and the the next mold I’ll soak the mold in white spirits and it will expand I’ll make a copy of that then make another mold by useing these processes the possibility’s are endless ,so I’m hoping to shrink the 6 inch down around 5 inch and I’m hoping to enlarge the 6 inch up to about 8 inch.

Ive made a simple injector and it’s worked a treat so next I’m making a duel mixing block out of silicon

Have you thought about using a 3d printer to make your moulds?
There is one guy on youtube that walks you through it well.
His plastics design is outstanding.

Yer I’ve seen a few printed molds I bought a silicon mold of eBay that’s come from and printed plug but I’d prefer to use something proven and play with it a bit the one of eBay had a fat belly and a small tail

we have some printers at work going up for auction but there old ones now it’s got me thinking because there’s a web site with endless free molds but a spool af plastic is over $40 these days and if you run out during a print you have lost it and when it has a brain fade you wast a lot of time and plastic.

Ok I’ve shrunk my 6 inch down to 4.5 inches I tried shrinking the mould but it failed but over time I found that what I diluted the silicon with actually worked by shrinking the plastic so I achieved what I wanted by accident still got some fine tuning to do before I make a silicon mould of it but as I’m away of it will be the first in the world of this plastic as the smallest on made is 5 inches.

If you create a 3d cad model of the bait you can get Bugmolds to cut an alloy mold for you at a decent price.

I don’t need him I’ll do a silicon one I’m not pumping them out commercially I’ve got to expand it now hopefully I can get 7.5 to 8 inches out of the 6 inch mold I made the new one in medium plastic so I’ll make one in hard salt water when I tune the mold up a bit the tails a bit thin.

If you are wanting to make silicone molds, I found making them 1 piece, and cutting just enough along the top to extract the lure best. In a zig zaggy fashion so they locate correctly. No flashing or leakage on the bottom half. The solid solutions pink silicone is very good.

I’ve got some Temu silicon it seems to work ok the first on is from plaster Paris when I get it right I’ll do a 2 part silicon mold

I’ve seen a few molds cut that way when they have complicated lines the uneven cut method works a treat.
