    Raymarine Element 9HV

My mate bought the Raymarine Element 9HV combo thinking he got a bargain. I've gone through it and it appears it doesn't display WP labels so when looking at the screen it's just a lot of WP's. You have to put the cursor on a WP and select OK to identify it, is this the norm if anyone has one of these.
Also couldn't find a way to zoom a range and have a split screen. Are we doing something wrong or is this just a basic unit as these days one would expect something a bit better. He has put it on his tinnie and in the estuary it will suffice but for the occasional offshore forage it certainly won't be as effective as he thought.

Thanks Chris, it looks like Raymarine were going to introduce WP labels late 2019 but I suspect they put all their resources into the Axiom series. It really sucks as you look at an area and you have to hunt over each WP to find the one you are looking for which is ok for a small area but when you want to do a shift to a location a few km's away it really is frustrating. It does allow you to look for nearby WP's once selected but it is a lot of wasted time. I mean even my cheap Garmin Hand Held from before that era showed the labels on screen. He reckons he'll keep it just for the tinnie in the Passage and worry about a different brand if he ever upgrades, and I thought I hated the Lowrance but got used to it's quirks but this unit of his I would be taking it back.

Haven't used the Element series, but in the Axiom range, you have the ability to turn the labels on/off. Has he looked for this in the menu, or doesn't it give this option?

Just came back from his place and after playing for an hour there was no labels nor the ability to do so. It looks like the unit was mainly designed for estuary use. The Element series apparently was supposed to get that feature in 2019 was when Raymarine decided they couldn't be bothered. I found the unit to be clunky to use, so much so that it's on my list of brands to avoid when I upgrade which is odd as I had a Raymarine sounder way back in the early days when I moved from paper sounders to screen ones and it was good then.

Really can't fault the Raymarine Axiom, and Axiom pro series, which I have. All brands have their cheap ones, Raymarine have the Element, Lowrance have the Hook. Just don't buy them expecting more than the most basic features, and usually missing some you'd really like, because why should they sacrifice sales of the more expensive ( profitable) models by giving you the good stuff for cheap?

No worries Chris, his primary use will be in the Pumicestone Passage with occasional forays offshore. The test run we did the other day gave a good picture. It's the fact neither of us has ever had a GPS that doesn't show a label next to the WP, even my cheap lowrance I had showed them.

Thanks Chris, he's back in Kalgoolie and not due back for a couple of months but we'll definitely have a look at that option.
