Disregard….
Hi
Mainly fishing off Portland, VIC. And targeting 10-40kg Tina.
For threadline - what brand of reel and rod?
For overhead - which brand of reel and rod?
Reasons for threadline over overhead or visa versa?

How often to you plan to fish for them per year
the reason I ask is some gear will last a few years doing a couple of trips a year
But if doing it 20 times in tuna season then something higher end will be the better option
what other fishing do you do as some crossover can occur between equipment
Good stuff guys. Great info!
We plan on going tuna fishing 2 x weekends each month between April - Sept per year.
Then, 2 x weekends per month in PPB from Oct - March for snapper.

This is where your budget determines your outfits
If trolling for tuna - you need to prepared for bigger fish ....... I'd be going with overheads & then it's about your budget . I would be going for 30W Tiagra's or a 12 Shimano Talica ........ so many rod options - Fully rollered , roller tip - budget dependent - you'll be paying $1100-$1500 per outfit
Spin reels - 8000 Shimano Thunnus for your snapper fishing ....... again plenty of rod options .... but a venom 15-40lb is a great match on the Thunnus 8000 - once loaded with braid - that's a $1000 outfit

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

Thanks Chris . Great tips.
The Tiagra 16 was mentioned before. Do you think this reel can accommodate large tuna?
Short answer is no.
You are going to want to fish 30 - 50 pound and some mates use 80-130 pound for two reasons
one to kill them quick so they don’t cook themselves into mush and before the sharks get to them.
Have you fished for them before ?

Thanks guys. Really good tips.
No - I have not fished for Tuna before. All new to me 😊.
Looking to buy 2 x overhead trolling outfits and 2 x spinning outfits for fishing offshore from Portland.
Tuna would be the main species we would be chasing…
Is braid with top shot mono the way to now for tuna or is a spool 100% full of mono used for trolling offshore for tuna?
My suggestion is to join a fishing club that specialise in game fishing - it will be a big help

Any of the good brand reels Stella or Saltiga in spinners ,the yanks use a lot of the big Lexa and tranx 400 size bait casters chasing those size tuna on charter boats or saltiga overhead reel in the line class you want to fish that will hold enough line that a 40kg tuna want spool you as far as rods got I only fish for tuna on fly in qld and 15kg fish are the biggest on average ,but it all depends on what length rod you like fishing a 40kg tuna will but a lot of hurt on you so a gamble butt is what I’d be looking for to take a bit of load.
On the other hand any set up for chasing giant trevally will catch your big southen blue fin, and a good tip when there under the boat and you can’t gain any line on them move your boat away to change the angle of attack and have fun
Many Thanks guys!
