Retaining the bearing buddies . It's just an additional thing as a back up to the Loctite

The other thing is that it is a visual reference ..... easy to see when traveling

That's all good & fine .... till you have a breakdown somewhere out western Queensland .

The Leichhardt Hwy or Gregory Development Road are not exactly the best roads - They were a nightmare after the big floods half a dozen or so years ago ..... we had brake calipers come off along with tossed bearing buddies (ended up using Gaffa tape to hold them on).

I'd rather be in a position to repair than have to try to get someone to help ...... hence the spares & tools

Again all of this. When you are just the other side of no where phone reception is not always an option so being self-sufficent is the best option.

Also worth checking what roadside cover you have. Base NRMA doesn't get your trailer covered https://www.mynrma.com.au/join-roadside

I'm in Queensland and so with RACQ. Their base cover will get your trailer 20kms which is better than nothing https://www.racq.com.au/roadside-ass...adside-options

it's an old adage, most accidents occur close to home. My first roadside repair was only 20 mins from home just after I'd gotten the last boat, a mechanic owned it and he claimed he had just replaced them (silly me trusting him), bearings completely collapsed, fortunately SuperCheap were only 10 mins down the road so managed to pick up most of what I needed there.
Since then made up my kit and it just gets put in the back and taken out again, better that than trying to find a place at night.

Good list for the big trips I would throw in a pack of big ass zip ties and a coil of light guage fencing wire - always handy to secure broken shit if you need to limp into the next town or home.

I got my lesson the hard way - fortunately my first collapse was close enough that I actually got home ..... but that one cost me a axle .

I've found that even with better than good maintenance - ship happens ....... a dust cover / buddy comes off - bearings don't last very long .
Just cant afford to not carry the gear ....... but it's pretty satisfying when you shear your wheel studs - lose the wheel late at night & you can be back on your way a couple of hours later ..... just because you carried the spare studs .

As I do some of these trips on my own - Imagine leaving the boat in the middle of nowhere for a few hours while you go look for parts

On a trip up to Bathurst Head 15 years back, the horribly corrugated roads north of Laura destroyed my trailer..most everything from the mudguards to the rollers, skids and many bolts and fittings loosened ..it didnt help that everything for the trip was shoved into the boat..it was full to the gunnels..

We had to stop and I cut down a couple of trees and wired the logs onto the trailer as bunks/skids so my 4.5m Tinny had something solid to sit on that wouldnt constantly loosen and fall off....worked reallly well for the trip up and back though launching wasnt exactly smooth...

So I'll add 3 more items to the list.......Chainsaw, wire and lots of duct tape....

We changed the bearings before the trip and had no problems with that aspect..

Good advice...Definately worth clarifying what is and isnt included and what "specialist towing" means..Base NRMA is pointless if you ever tow anything..

And QLD is all rather complicated so we go with Ultmate for $300 just so we now we are covered for most stuff..and if you are a tradie or business owner its tax deductable anyway...

If your cover doesnt include the towing or flatbed truck they also charge you for the return empty trip as well as the time to come and get you and load you up...10 years back it was $150 per hour..

Living in a rural area the ultimate cover is good peace of mind and covers for your second vehicle or if you are travelling in a mates vehicle as well....

It shows here the ultimate one is the only plan that covers caravan and trailer recovery..

Bathurst Bay was a favourite, the biggest problem we generally had was mud after a wet season but I do remember my first trip in there as once we got past Laura I shredded 2 tyres. I had airbags and had them pumped up firm. Wrong, it meant that sharp blue metal road base they used at one stage (it was the only year I remember it being used) would just shred the tyres. Got rid of the airbags as even one of them failed on another trip, sharp little stones flicked up st 80 km/hr would penetrate anything.
BTW Col, I see the Lions Den was up for sale. Loved that as a stop over.

For off-road, a spare hub with Japanese cones and grease packed bearings fitted, double cryovaced to keep the dust out.

Extra Japanese grease packed/cryovaced bearings in the wheel bearing first aid kit, along with the necessary tools, extra parts (u-bolts, nuts) and grease gun etc, etc, etc.

Haven't needed to use it yet, touch wood!!!

It was my first time on the Canberra to coast road, we did the drive up from Melbourne to the coast in one day, so hardly stopped.
After Canberra, was probably the worst down pour and conditions to drive in iIve ever experienced... roads were near flooded, pot holes were appearing everywhere, being opened up by the sheer amount of rain that was coming down. A lot of traffic just decided to stop and let it pass, but it didn't stop and continued for over 24 hours. I was glad we drove straight thru it and made it coast side, as next day we heard reports that it got worse next day with all the water coming down off the mountains, even tho the rain had eased.
I was considering using that route again with the boat on when we move up, 9 hours verses over 11 up the coast road, but nope, I'd rather take 2 hours longer to get there than risk that road with the boat on. Will do it again in better conditions one day, they say it's a beautiful drive when conditions are better ..

Lions den is just out of Cooktown heading south toward cape trib just before the Bloomfield track ,
A bad days fishing has got to be better than any day at work......

Just a wee bit, if you are ever doing a trip that way it's definitely worth the stop over, we would usually stop there on the way back and treat ourselves to glamping accommodation.
