I get that the FG is excellent as a slim knot when using heavier lines. Most of my fishing is Murray Cod or Estuary and I rarely use more than 8lb braid to a 12 lb nylon leader. Always used the double uni. Simple to tie and never failed me.

My flattie fishing is 6lb braid to 8lb leader, surprising how big a fish you can catch on that outfit. I've done a uni when my eyes weren't good and left my glasses behind but cringed everytime the knot passed through the tip, 2 -4 kg rods do have very fine tips. I can do the Flaming Good Knot in the dark if need be but with the 5lb brand it's wind that does me in
Offshore I use the FG as well to join leader to braid and the uni tying hooks, jigs to the leader.

the doubt uni failing on me on lighter lines (15lb and under) was what drove me towards the FG. I was having so many knot failures with the lighter braid cutting into the mono or flouro leader. Initially I had major issues with the FG knot also but that was a case of not doing the 4-6 wrap uni knot after the two half hitches. I was finding after a lot of casts the locking knots would come undone and the knot would fail. After changing it up to do the 5-6 turn uni after the two half hits he’s it’s working great.

Try the fly tying liquid used to set lures, it sets in the uv which means a few seconds in sunlight and stays supple. I'll have to find it and get back to you. I just finish mine with the risotto knot and have no problems it undoing.

I'll get to it tomorrow, I've been away for a couple of days. I only use it on the heavier offshore rigs if I want to cast out a floater or lure. On my light rigs it's not needed.
