Marine Park announcement !!! Dec 2013.

    16 December 2013

Senator Boswell welcomes marine park announcement: “A promise honoured”
QUEENSLAND Senator Ron Boswell has welcomed the announcement that fishing bans scheduled to lock out fishing from at least 1.3 million square kilometres of ocean round Australia have been scrapped.

“Labor’s management plans – including massive bans on recreational and commercial fishing – now will not be implemented on July 1 next year,” Senator Boswell said. “Recreational and commercial fishers can continue fishing everywhere they do now.

“In the meantime, an expert scientific panel will look closely at the science supporting the marine reserves and bioregional advisory panels will improve consultation with stakeholders. We are going to take a sensible, truly scientific look at what’s needed in the marine parks and make sure recreational and commercial fishers and other stakeholders are involved in genuine consultation.”

Senator Boswell said the announcement from Environment Minister Greg Hunt and Agriculture Parliamentary Secretary Richard Colbeck that the management plans for new marine parks had been scrapped had honoured a Coalition election promise.

“The Coalition Government has had the new Commonwealth marine reserves re-proclaimed. This invalidates the management plans signed off by Labor and stops the exclusion zones that would have come into effect next July, while keeping the parks and their boundaries.

“This is one Coalition election promise that Labor and the Greens have not been able to block, though they’ve screamed blue murder about us keeping these areas open to fishing,” he said. “Both those parties have been captured by people with an anti-fishing green agenda and no-one involved in fishing or seafood should ever trust either of them.”

Senator Boswell said he had “campaigned hard” on the marine park issue and said the Coalition stance had won overwhelming support from voters throughout Queensland.

“This is a common-sense approach that Queenslanders understand,” he said. “It is possible to allow fishing and still maintain a healthy marine environment with rich biodiversity. We are not in the business of banning fishing without any scientific justification just for the sake of appeasing environmental lobbyists.”

Senator Boswell said Labor’s fishing bans would have cost tens of millions of dollars of lost income and hundreds of lost jobs in Queensland fishing ports like Karumba, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Mooloolaba.

    No debating the facts.

Australia's commercial take is about 6kgs / square kilometer of it's oceans ( OEZ ), where as the rest of the world takes around 1,000 to 6,000kgs. Australia has the most stringent of ocean / fishing laws of any country in the world. Australia already leads the world in % of waters under marine zones. Australia leads the world in commercial fishing innovations to provide a sustainable fishery. Australias wild fishery is the envy of every country in the world and this has been brought about by good regulation and innovation. As far as I am aware, there is only one fish species in Australian waters that is classed ( independantly ) as endangered, and that is a species of shark. Australias OEZ waters are considered the ' cleanest ' of all the worlds OEZ's.

At all times, the LNP has supported independant scientific research to assess any changes to Marine Zones. This independant research has been welcomed by all of Australias Recreational and Commercial fishing representatives and groups. This type of engagement is seen by these groups as necessary to fulfil the obligation of true, stakeholder involvement in Government decisions that affect those stakeholders. At all times, the sustainability and health of the Marine Environment is paramount to the outcomes of any legislation.

    cheers.

orange roughy don't appear to be very far from endangered. they are listed as "conservation dependent". life spans of up to 150 years, they don't breed until 25-30 years old and their numbers were absolutely decimated in the 80's. a sad example of fishing greed.

These Marine parks have been in the pipeline for 20 years. Mate it"s all about Money and keeping the Commercial Fishing Industry(Sooner or later they will seek to raise their Quotas to keep the Wealthy and the Asian Mkts Happy (SUPPLY AND DEMAND) . With the Population Growing, the demise of the Natural Enviroment, and also the Technology which we have at hand in todays society, FISH DON"T STAND A CHANCE. This is'nt about today nor tomorrow it's for (OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS). Oh and one more thing, it's just a matter of time before that SUPER TRAWLER will be allowed back into this Country.

Lot of use of capitals mantra. Their are trawlers already working now that have a far bigger capacity than the super trawler. The super trawler is however a factory ship and can process there catch without returning to port.

    FK-orfff from our rivers & 10klms min. off-shore , as there's a squillion acres-2-harvest.....

I don't think the tuna stocks are to healthy , the Japanese sure know how to slaughter them from the pacific. I think there will come a time soon when commercial fishing is no longer cost effective, how far do our tuna boats have to go to catch fish now?.

Re: Marine Park announcement !!! Dec 2013.

The purpose of marine parks has nothing to do with effective fisheries management in Australia. If you think otherwise get a copy of the MP legislation and read what the purpose is.

So you are misguided if you think they are necessary or in fact relevant in any way for fish sustainability in Aussie waters.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

What's happened to the 200,000 square km of GBRMP designated rec-only (no commercial netting or long-liners)? Do we still have that or is it opened up to the pros with these new changes?
