Coalitions fishing policy release. August 2013

    JOINT PRESS RELEASE
THE HON. TONY ABBOTT MHR, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
THE HON. GREG HUNT MHR, SHADOW MINISTER FOR CLIMATE ACTION, ENVIRONMENT AND HERITAGE
SENATOR THE HON. RICHARD COLBECK, SHADOW PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR FISHERIES AND FORESTRY
THE COALITION’S POLICY FOR A MORE COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES SECTOR

A Coalition government will restore confidence in the Australian fishing industry by returning scientific and commercial rigour to decision making about Marine Protected Areas.

If elected, the Coalition will suspend and review the flawed Management Plans for Marine Protected Areas that have been imposed without fair, adequate or thoughtful consultation.

Fishing is a major industry and Australia needs a balanced and informed approach to fisheries management.

We know that the biggest supporter of environmentally responsible fishing practices is the fishing industry – because they do not want to harm the very environment that is providing them with a living.

Australians aren’t just proud fishers, they are smart fishers – and they know that Labor’s marine park lockouts are about managing the Greens, not managing the environment.
A sustainable fishing industry is an integral part of a strong primary producing sector.
The Coalition is committed to supporting the Rural Research and Development Corporations with greater funding to deliver cutting edge technology, continued applied research, and an increased emphasis on collaborative innovation and extension.

The Coalition will boost confidence in the Australian fishing industry. We will:

     Scrap the carbon tax.

 Immediately suspend and review the flawed Management Plans for Marine Protected Areas imposed without fair or adequate consultation.

 Require peer reviewed scientific evidence of threats to marine diversity within the Marine Protected Areas to be made publicly available.

 Establish a Bioregional Advisory Panel for each of the five marine bioregions.

 Establish a National Recreational Fishing Council to improve lines of communication between recreational fishers and government.

 Cut red tape as part of the Coalition’s policy to cut $1 billion in red and green tape. Areas identified include streamlining of regulatory audits required under the Food Safety and Export Certification (AQIS), harmonisation of regulations and simplification of regulations around management of introduced fish species.

 Work with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Indigenous Reference Group to improve engagement with indigenous communities.

 Conduct recreational fishing surveys every five years.

 Recognise OceanWatch as a Natural Resource Management Group with responsibility for enhancing fish habitats and improving water quality.

 Provide $5 million to target invasive marine species with a view to the removal or eradication of these marine pests.

 Fight illegal foreign fishing and ensure the ACV Ocean Protector and/or its replacement is provided with sufficient funding.

The ‘lock-up’ mentality of Labor completely ignores the fact that Australia’s recreational and commercial fishers are dedicated to sustainability.

A Coalition government will help the fishing industry around Australia employ more people and grow by abolishing the carbon tax, lowering the company tax rate to 28.5 per cent and by introducing our Policy for Fisheries.

The Coalition’s Policy for A More Competitive and Sustainable Fisheries Sector is part of Our Real Solutions Plan to build a stronger Australia and a better future – for all Australians.

I'm not convinced that more commercial effort is in the interest of recreational fishos. These changes will not impact on the state government Green Zones. we need Can't Do to review these but then again he can't really do that as he has sacked all the fisheries scientists that would have given him the much needed scientific basis for decision making

All good but I see flaws.

The vast majority of the " promises " are directed at the Commercial Fishery.

Recognising " Oceanwatch ", who are a conservation group with interstate ties to rec and pro fishing. We still need the Govt to recognise a peak rec fishing body, and by recognise I mean fund and engage with them and ALL things relating to the fishery.

Establish a National Recreational Fishing Council to improve lines of communication between recreational fishers and government. AND Work with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Indigenous Reference Group to improve engagement with indigenous communities. What !!!! There IS a National Rec Fishing group and as for the Indigenous group.... all that is waffle for... pick up the phone.

Conduct recreational fishing surveys every five years............ AND....... these are the only tools used and do not reflect to within any serious accuracy, the socio-economic benefit of rec fishing within the communities.

Require peer reviewed scientific evidence of threats to marine diversity within the Marine Protected Areas to be made publicly available.

been down this track...... missed critical word.. " Independent "...

There is a major ommision in this release and that is the lack of the use of " Recreational Fishing ".

Sorry guys.......... I am reading a lot between the lines here.

It does appear that the Coalition will win the upcoming election. It is MORE THAN CRITICAL that each and every one of us......... hound the incoming Minister responsible for our fishery to impliment policy and provide us with factual and transparent accounts of progress etc.

Noddy has been very slack after we provided him with a Mandate to improve rec fishing fishing in Qld, let's hope we get a better reaction from his National counterparts.

    IMO only.............. ><> ><>

    You reckon Pete ?

This is the first time I have read the policy & just as I thought ...... This is about commercial fishing first & foremost
There are points that should be raising rec fishoes eyebrows & not cause for applauding this policy.

Commercial fisherman are not known for their sustainability - Rape and pillage if there is a buck in it ie netting of the Boyne River after the Lake Awoonga overflows ( only to see 100's of tonnes dumped)

    Just look at the wording

Phill , when I heard about this yesterday - I had doubts & your post confirmed it (the first details I had seen)
Sorry - It would be different if these areas were opened up for recreational / charter fishing only .

I can already hear in the distance the super trawler turning its engines over

What are the five areas that they will look at. Does this include the GBRMP. Which was brought in under dodgy science by the Libs

Re: Coalitions fishing policy release. August 2013

It is a good policy IMO, like our state policy to stop the Green rot. A scientific panel to review the evidence and make recommendations for change is a good thing. Whether you personally like Tony Abbott or not (and I do) if he becomes PM, he will improve the lot of rec fishers in marine protected areas.

Re: Coalitions fishing policy release. August 2013

What, like the rec fishos being able to use one line in the green zones under QLD state government control? Yeah, that has been rushed in.

Re: Coalitions fishing policy release. August 2013

Well for god's sake MP Mark why don't you do that in the state arena? At the Tinnie n' Tackle Show just before the state election you and Campbell both said you would, and also said you'd do it pretty quickly if I remember rightly. So far a big failure.

    Mark

sorry mate - you wont get too many an empathetic ear here when you start talking recreational fishing policies and a Coalition government
You personally led a lot of people up the garden path on that front - delivered nothing & now try to convince us that you have delivered & that the feral masters will be there for the rec fishoes of Qld (& Aust).

What will be reopened will be for the benefit of commercial interests first and foremost

    No way ......
