    Use a multi-meter or test lamp to check if the wires are live when the engine is running. Usually charging wires would be fairly heavy duty not small diameter that you would use for say wiring up nav lights.

    cheers
    i want a bigger boat

    Re: outboard to charge a battery

    You will need the rectifier to be able to charge the battery.
    Item #56 in this catalogue, part #0581778.

    Note: you must have a battery in place before you start the motor or the rectifier will fry itself. I have done two over the years, one due to a loose battery terminal, other to a dead cell in the battery.

    Get the model number off your swivel bracket or welsh plug on the block that will give us the exact motor you have got then off to the BRP website to compare parts.

    Your motor doesn't have a stator.

    I take that back, it looks like you have a stator after all.
    Have you looked at the BRP website?

    Your model number is He20Srledr not He205rledr.
    Tunaticer put the BRP link up earlier.

    You have a 1996 20HP, click your way down to your exact motor, check under the IGNITION heading then compare it with an electric start one.

    Re: outboard to charge a battery

    Look at the chart I put up...

    H= Hong Kong
    E= Evinrude
    20= HP
    SR= Rope Start-Sail-Non-Tilt
    L= Long Shaft 20"
    ED= 96, the year model
    R= Model run or suffix

    Follow the numbers through the chart and it all makes complete sense.

    Now at the BRP website....

    Untick the email box & click 'view the parts catalogue'.
    Select Evinrude from the drop down menu.
    Select your year model 1996.
    Select your HP, 20.
    Select your model number, in your case the 4th one down.
    Pay no attention to the first & last letters, they are only country designations and model runs as described above.
