Anglers have been warned to brush up on the law before dangling a line this summer after a Gatton Valley couple were fined $800 for catching a 130kg protected Queensland grouper.
Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) inspectors fined Steven Kutija and his wife Jaclyn $400 each after the Queensland Times revealed their catch last week.
It is the only time this year someone has been fined for capturing a Queensland grouper.

He stated that he thought the cod was either a Maori Cod or a Bar Cod what a joke! Maori cod only grow to about 7kg (blue maori 15kg) and Bar cod are only found in very deep offshore waters out beyond the shelf. The area where he was fishing (25ks from Bundaberg) would be no more than 50 metres deep.
Experienced fisherman!!!! pull the other leg.
No wonder Fisheries fined both of them.

Any Experienced fisher or inexperienced fisher (which is me) - surely would appreciate the size and age of this fish... enough to return it.
He should have his boat confiscated, stupid hoon.
The worst thing about this is the guy was on several news chanels and in the papers and no one knew that what he had done was wrong and against fisheries regulations. With the amount of people that go fishing the DPI should be on a bit of a campaign to educate people on the rules and maybe this sort of thing wont happen as much.

When was the photo taken? Before he was fined? Was he fined because he showed the picture to too many people?
