    mackay Barra

Hey guys, took me a long time to right this report on here but here it is.

Heres a few of the picks, all small barra. but considering the weather, wasnt to bad of an effort. first time targeting barra on lures.

4in total, most around the 65ish mark.

dad got one at 68 also.

    15-20flatty around 50cm.

    1 at 63 on light gear - 4lb leader.

a few bream on top water.

    many cod, most around 30-40cm.

a few trevs and queenie, but most pelagic action was happening off shore.

5-10bust offs from bigger barra at new spot x, hooks broke on some lures, hooks straightend on some, rubbed leader on oysters, was hepic haha. 5 or so bombers lost. good fun seeing 90-1mtr barra tail dance.

    heres the photos

(Dont check drag setting when a lure is in the water - note to self)

    Re: mackay Barra

    Good effort.

Was that before or after the rain?

How long were you fishing for to get that result?

I hit the lower reaches of the Pioneer River yesterday for nil results. The water looks like chocolate soup!!!

What part of Mackay were you fishing?

    Again, Excellent effort.

    Cheers

    Re: mackay Barra

hey mate, it was janaury. Illbilbie area, it rained all week i was there.

The barra were caught in 3 sesh, first sesh nothing ecxept flattys ect.

Second trip aimed my lures more for the barra and hooked a few and caught 2

The rest were the third day.

The cod were in the last week there as i couldnt be bothered walking to the barra spot in the rain

Pioneer river is good, but the rain will push to much fresh into, try and find a small tidal creek that pushes new water evewry 6hours.

    Hope that helps, thanks matt.

    Re: mackay Barra

Yeah the flap slap is an awesome lure, do you use them in the deep or shallow version?

    What do you target?

    Re: mackay Barra

I had two of each, but I'm down to one deep.
    Need to find some more.
I use them for big flatties, 78 is the biggest so far.
I found the shallow version works great on the flats.
It floats really well, so you can cast, let it float back up, give it a rip, let it float, etc.
Most times it was hit as it came to rest on the top of the water.
    Great fun!

Have not fished up around your way, looks like I should!
    Cheers and thanks.

    Re: mackay Barra

mate i live in brisbane, dad lives in mackay.

Suppose you live at Ningi, i love fishing bribie, more so Coochin creek though.

If you want some more megabass lures you can find them at tackle warehouse on the south side, long drive but if your ever working around there its the place to go for qaulity tackle.

its a bit exxy, so i prefer to buy lures of the net - works out to be a lot cheaper.

Also i love the deep flapslap work great on cod and threadfin.

Great pics mate, iv got a photo of a cod right where you got that barra in that sandy area.haha you did a lot better than we did thre.Did you walk in or quad bike.my mate used to get a lot of barra in the next creek south, but the walk across the flats leaves a bit to be desired.Awesome fishing mate well done.Did you happen to throw any whitin poppers in that last sandy pool. When we were there there was some really nice ones but we only had big lures.Going back in september so hope to give it another go.

    Re: mackay Barra

I walked there once, and way to far to walk again haha. so 4wd got me there the other 2 times. Its a good little spot, it doesnt get flooged like many places as well, so dont tell anyone about it hehehe.

They are pretty wised up with the old bombers now though, try something different and it should produce for you.

    Good luck in sept.

    Re: mackay Barra

Hi Matt i have only fished this creek a half a dozen times and have caught flathead cod and barra but have never seen the rock bar up the creek. How far up the creek is the bar as the only bar i have seen is at the mouth.I see some people drive across the salt pan and some people drive down the beach from the north side of the creek i usually walk in for the exercise and only catch and release.Great to see you had such a great time there in January

    Thanks for the great pics
    Bill
