#2 floats but running like SH#T!!

    Hi all,
With family in tow, the launching of Poodroo's old Quinnie affectionately labelled #2, finally happened this morning. I had all my family ( audience) along for this momentous occasion too, Kelly the 14YO armed with the digital camera and 1Gig of memory! Actually, for peace of mind I thought I should go as escort, we weren't too sure of how things were going to go. The poor old 25 Mariner has not had a run for a lllllooooonnnngggg time, but a few bits have been done to give it a good chance of going well today.

Some things we noticed straight away..... Poodroo will have to get a pair of bearing buddies, there's no way of getting launched without sinking the hubs. The new Dunbier trailer sits really high, and when it pivots on the back skids, it looks like she is going straight over the end of a cliff!!
Next.... The motor is stalling, and we are keen to get it on the plane, but ..... There's a tiny squirt of water leaking from the transom!! A quick dollop of Sikaflex, and it's done!!

So after what seemed an eternity we were out through the manly leads and on the way to wello..... almost. Come on Poodroo, open her up!! The old girl was flat out on the throttle, but struggling to do 15 knots. When I motored closer, I could hear the motor missing and protesting. It appeared he was getting somewhere, and I was keen to have a fish, so I got my tug humming in the 4500 rpm range to let Poodroo catch up, but always peering over the shoulder to see if he was still motoring. My wife taps me on the shoulder and says " I can't see him anymore!!" Ooopps! Nither can I. But I was the proverbial bees #$@$!! from wello away, so decided I should have a fish and see if Poodroo turned up.
Here's a word of advice to all the do gooder fathers out there intent on giving 2 girls and mum a good time fishing. DON'T GO TO WELLO if you know what's good for you, It took at least an hour before I managed to cast my own line into the water, and even then, it took about 15 seconds before I had to re rig one of their lines due to losing a hook to snagging. But for the 1st hour it was hot, we were blown away by big fish, and had massive runs to have the fish spit the hook. Poodroo turned up, but looking a little puzzled about the slow trip out. The motor is really running like sh#t! So much so, that after having a drift, a couple of times he could not start it, so my boat gave him a tow back to the start of the drift.
As much as it was a beaut day out there, we were'nt going to tempt fate in a small tinnie with engine trouble, so I made the suggestion we get going soon, it's a long haul back to Manly at idle speed. Poodroo decided to give the motor another chance at starting, and managed to get it to fire up. He made it all the way back to manly under his own steam, but back to the workshop she goes!!

About the only highlight was my wife thinking she was on to a good fish.... How the heck do you hook a cormorant ( bird) in the foot?? Poor buggar thought his number was up when he saw me, but I love our wildlife, Steve Irwin would have been proud of the care we took to unhook him and set him free. The bird was fine, but he looked like he was taking a shower immediately after being set free, dipping his wings and shoulders into the water and shaking it through his feathers. I must smell real bad! He eventually took off, but not before I realized I came within a centimeter of being left a message. It was all down the side of the boat. Poor buggar was really frightened out of his witts!

Some photo's from the budding photographer attached. Thanks Kelly, we had an OK day. Hope the motor is sorted before your holidays Poodroo!

Well it was a very interesting day out for a maiden voyage. I thought we were going to christen it with fish but I too found fishing wello difficult with a couple of young ones. They keep you so busy you don't get the time to focus on your own rod so the couple of decent hits I had I was not ready for. BANG....ZZZZZZZZZ..SNAP! was about all I got. Did boat one small squire which was returned. The kids enjoyed being with dad on the water but I think I will enjoy being on the water much more once I can gain confidence in the motor. Dropped in past Finga's on my way home and did the compression test. Bottom cylinder is still down on pressure but did improve since the last test by 10psi. What didn't help was the mixture was far too rich. When the plugs were pulled out they were drowning in oil. Not good. Looks like some work is needed but I will get there. Nice photos by my niece Kelly.

Photo turned out pretty cool I have to agree, did you spot the bird next to the sun? The shot was actually coming out of the Manly boat harbour.

    Ohh dear...

Well atleast you are out on the water. Have followed the fine tuning of #2 in the other thread.

Maybe, just maybe a handful of prunes in the fuel tank might have your number #2's running smoothly in no time!

Sorry, but someone had to say it!

Lol booty. I was waiting for it. Well prunes may have helped. Couldn't have made it worse. I guess I had high expectations for it to run well first up considering the motor hadn't been run in the water properly for an estimated 3-4 years. When we arrived back at Scalem's place we tinkered with the throttle linkages and also the fuel mix because even after I backed it off a bit it still sounded like it was drowning in fuel so the fuel mix screw was screwed in heaps more while it was running on the muffs and it started to actually sound much better and want to idle without stalling. Another water test may be on the cards. One thing I can be thankful for is that it did get me out there and it did get me back home again and I even came home with the same number of passengers as I started with. Stay tuned for more #2 epic adventures in the near future. Once I have a reliable motor on the back of it the next step may well be prettying it up a little with new paint but no hurry, it seems to have character in it's current livery.

Mike it was a lovely day out and perfect conditions but in the wonderful world of boating when the motor plays up you just can't relax and enjoy anywhere near as much as you'd want to. I will get there though. The pressure is on because the Touchy M&G is coming up fast.
    Cheers,

Let me know if you need an 'escort vehicle' for another outing. I am always up for a day on the water.
