Heat wave conditions leading up to Christmas day stimulated mangrove jack to bite with good numbers coming from the western entrance point of Swan Bay, deeper holes in the Pimpama River and along the rock walls around Sovereign Island in the northern Broadwater.
A strip of fish flesh drifted around snags was the most productive method but they were also caught on deep diving lures trolled close to snags.
Any hot steamy days over the next month would be your best chance of catching one, especially if you can fish an early morning or late evening tide change.
Muddies came on the bite a week or two before Christmas but have been very scarce since.
The better option is to target sand crabs in the Bay particularly in the deeper water around Mud Island, the edge of the Amity Banks or down the western side of North Stradbroke Island.
The area around the southern Bay islands that is usually a consistent producer has been hit hard over the holiday period and as a result has not been as productive.
Mackerel numbers have increased over the past few weeks with the Sunshine Coast now scoring good numbers and catches in our northern Bay waters improving.
Those scoring the best results are working the shipping lane beacons and ledges down the western side of Moreton Island but there were also a few reports of fish caught from the Rainbow Channel and down the western side of North Stradbroke.
There is still plenty of diver whiting on the banks throughout the Bay with the Amity and Naval Reserve Banks the most consistent producers.
Be careful when removing weed from your line, as there are still patches of fireweed throughout the Bay, particularly on the weed banks.
Small sharks are dominating angler effort in the Albert and Logan Rivers.
Quite a few anglers are catching a feed but just as many are missing out.
Your best chance is by using live bait like a bony bream, mullet, gar or small catfish but a fresh fillet used in conjunction with a good berley trail should be almost as good.
On the offshore scene, current picked up on the wider grounds over the past week but there were still good catches of mahi mahi, small amberjack, pearl perch, kingfish and still the odd squiry snapper hanging around.
