There will be small tides this week in the lead up to the next full moon on January 29, these smaller tides are ideal to fish areas that normally have a lot of tidal run making angling difficult.
The Pin bar and Seaway should produce jew, trevally and mangrove jack and the Rainbow Channel would be an ideal spot to target mackerel and tusk fish.
And the word is that Amity locals are catching school mackerel in the Rainbow Channel by trolling chrome lures deep behind a paravane.
While over that way it is worth putting a few dillies in as there have also been good numbers of sand crabs caught down the western side of North Stradbroke Island.
Strong winds have kept most offshore anglers at home over the past week, those that have managed to slip out during a break in the weather have reported slim pickings and a surprising lack of baitfish.
Pelagic species are in reasonable numbers on the shallow reefs however sharks are making it difficult to get a good fish to the surface especially if you’re using berley.
The foreshores of Wellington Point have been a consistent producer of quality whiting over the past few weeks.
Wellington Point local Johnny Gray has been catching his share on prawns by fishing the foreshores after dark.
A few pan size sweetlip are being caught on the dredged coral grounds off Ormiston and on the drop offs west of the Huybers Light.
Squid seems to be the pick of the baits and the last hour of the run in tide is reportedly the most productive.
Surprisingly there are still plenty of tailor just inside the Pin bar and on the beaches either side, most anglers weighed in a feed during the Sundowner’s Fishing Club weigh in on Sunday.
Bayside local Anthony Wishey and keen junior angler Dimitri Georgio fished for whiting at the Pin on Saturday night with the Victory fishing club and had no trouble finding fish: best results came on blood worms and rock wriggler worms before midnight while the moon was still in the sky.
