Report from Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia.
Fished the 21 mile bait grounds off Mooloolaba yesterday from Russell Bowman’s 5.5m plate aluminium boat “Timewaster”. Went something like 12-7-6, tagging 1x35kg Sailfish, 1x40kg Sailfish, kept 2xMahi Mahi and released 1 and released 1xStripey. Russ got one Sail and Warren Morgenstern the other. These were their first Sailfish and Warren's first Billfish.
Trevor Parkes’s 36’ Blackwatch “First Class” was the only other boat out there. They tagged 2xBlack Marlin and anywhere between 3-6xSailfish from what we saw as well as at least one other species (saw them on a Mahi Mahi). In the marina they were flying 2xtagged Blacks and 3xtagged Sails but they might have run out of flags. That was about their score for the morning but we saw them on a few more fish in the afternoon. There were free-jumping Mahi Mahi as well as Sailfish out there a few times yesterday. The bite was constant all morning with a bit more action around the tide changes even though we were on small tides. The hot time of 2:00 p.m. didn't fire and it was all but over by then. Conditions were perfect with a light South Wester inshore early which swung 10-15 SE straight away then eventually flattening out to 5 knots East then a 5-10 NE sea-breeze to run home with.
All strikes came on trolled live Slimey Mackeral again though we gave lures a fair go. We were playing with Russ’s new Cannon Digitroll downrigger most of the day which took the first three strikes then the unweighted livey from the outrigger started getting most of the action. The downrigger on its early performance has a lot of potential. Now to start rigging a few dead baits on it.
