Left Caloundra through the bar ( i mean bathtub) yesterday morning at 4.30am and headed for the five mile to attempt to get a few schoolies for a feed. Conditions were perfect with less than 5 knots of northerley until about 8am. Found a good bait school and anchored up with about 7 or 8 other boats, deployed some livies and sat back and waited. We were bottom bouncing some pillys and squid as well. The mackeral were not playing the game until by brother hooked this beauty on a pilly meant for the bottom. It happened to be his first mackeral and his biggest ever fish. It was 111cm long and went like a freight train and christened his new rod perfectly. Not a bad mackeral to start your account. Also landed a nice sweety to sweeten the pie.

Guys, is the mackeral a large spotty? #Someone ID please.

I would guess somewhere between 5-6kg, really hard to tell with a photo.

I would suggest that ignorance is bliss, after all, if you don't know the correct weight you can't be telling a lie.

my guess #is over 7kg.

Joho_SS

Thats the closest. I think it would have been over 9kgs. It was a lot fatter than it looks in the photo. #Just weighed the fillets only and they came in at 6.1kgs. #Allow 1.5 to 2kgs for the head and the same for the frame and 9kgs is probably still a bit light.

Guess I should have weighed it.

I just searched the records and can only find a 9.2kg specimen that holds the record. Would this be right?

Ryan, dunno where you got that from :-?. You are required to cut one pectoral fin off spanish mackerel, but there is no cutting of fins required on spotties or doggies.

Foggy,

We got one at Hervey Bay just before XMas that was 102cms long and it weighed 8.23kgs, so I reckon the one you caught was probably nudging 10kgs and would have been a record as far as I can see.

Bloody idiot, you should have weighed it. LOL

Keep up the good work. Lets catch up for a softy session in the bay soon.

biggest spotted mackerel I could find in the ANSA Qld records was 6.5 kg, and National 9.25 kg, although these aren't the latest editions. That Qld record has to get broken before long....
