Me and a mate are looking to go around the Cairns area in April 2006 for a fishing holiday. We would prefer to find a place where we can get cheapish self-contained cabins very close to the water where we can also hire a tinny to go fishing.

The types of fish we would be after are barramundi, mangrove jack, queenfish, fingermark and grunter as well as the bread and butter fish like flathead and bream.

Does anyone know of any good places to go, websites for information and anything else that could be useful?

We are looking to do this on a budget. We might go up there for 2-3 weeks and are hoping to spend $1000 pp for just accomodation. Is this possible or is it an unrealistic dream?

You can get those species at Hinchinbrook. Stay at either Lucinda or Cardwell, both have heaps of accommodation options. You can hire boats as well. You could also hire a Tupperware from Meteor Rentals in Townsville http://www.meteorrentals.com.au/index.cfm?Menu=OurRange&PageID=78 which would give you a good boat at a really good weekly rate.
