carp put on an average of about 3lb a year in the right conditions,
this is one reason why they are a highly prized sport fish in europe. you can use that as a rough guide to age.
huge Carp can be worth thousands & thousands of dollars in europe

Fishinherts,

Carp are considered vermin in Australia.

How is a fish worth money? Is there prize money on offer or is endorsements etc?

I reading in a book where a 150lb Atlantic Tarpon was worth US$250,000. The photo of the fish in the resort's brochure was responsible for a full booking the following season.

large carp are worth lots of money to individual fishery owners.
the bigger better fish that are getting caught at their water, the better reputation that water will have = more money in the fishery owners pocket.

common carp (Cyprinus carpio) tend to be bigger than the wild Carp in Europe and can change hands for up to £3,000 [AUD$8,000] for a 50-lb [22-kg] specimen in Britain. A 30-lb fish can be sold in Britain for £1,000 [AUD$2,500]. A 5lb [2.2kg] Carp could be worth up to £300 [AUD$800]. They are used to stock lakes fished by fee-paying anglers. Koi carp, a brightly coloured ornamental pet, can be sold for up to £10,000 [AUD$26,000] each.

some fishery owners run strict "syndicate" waters, these are usually the waters where you will find the bigger fish due to each angler having an equal share in the water and contributing an equal ammount of money. the anglers who join such "syndicate" waters often do so for the large fish and few other anglers present.

When I can't get to the mountains or the coast I do a bit of LBG (Lake Burley Griffon) carp murdering myself and the mirror carp pictured are the same size here, we recently held a day out for families at lake Tuggeranong with a carp cull and the size of the mudsuckers was enormous. It's scary to think how many wern't landed and continue to breed.
We don't even think of spinning for trout anywhere down stream of Bolaro station on the (Bidgee) anymore.

I left holland+germany in November for my break out here. I've been over there for 3 years and I still don't plan to catch carp when I go back this month. Terrible.

But the shop I bought semisoft squid-like lures at in Holland is decked out mainly for carp fishing. Whole magazines are dedicated to carp fishing. You'd go nuts, especially about the specially devised cans of pickled corn and brightly coloured balls of bait ready for carp fishing! Tons of special carp gear. Crickey.

Furthermore my German partner+her family continued, until recently, to have carp for the main course at christmas. They would load the bathtub with two carp, give em names the day before, and surprize, they are on the table the next day.

At the local trout and eel farm, you see many carp being groomed for christmas lunch! nnooooo!

I stick to the smoked eel and trout, danke!!

So all I need to do is to find a way of shipping a boat load of 20kg carp over to Europe and auction them off and I can buy a new boat...........
Wonder if I can sort something out on ebay?
