if a hook is left in the mouth of a fish how long does it take to rust away.

I've read that rather than rusting away, the hook forms an abcess at point of entry and falls out ! ;)

Mick it depends on the type of hook. Bronze will rust the quickest followed by tinned. Chrome and stainless hooks take much longer.

For some hooks it is almost before your very eyes. After reading this thread, I paid particular attention to our hooks. The hooks in question were Mustad 4190 5/0's I had a brand new set of hooks on & after approx 3 hours worth of fishing, when I bought one of my live baits in the hooks were already showing signs of rust. Having a look at these hooks 3 days later & rusting is already getting to a degree that the hook may be unusable in the very near future.
So all I can make of it, is that a fish with these types of hooks hanging out is mouth or what ever wouldn't have to wait too long before the hooks fall out.
