What is your prefered type and length of spin rod for using 6 kilo line on a high speed threadline off the rocks for all the smaller pelagics, thanks Andrew?

hi
I use a 7ft live fibre rod and a spin reel the tip is just right for the fish that I target off the rocks

I've got a 10' custom uglystick.
Great stick, casts a 50gr lure like a bullet.
Pasific composites make some really nice blanks.

I use a hand made Snyderglas FMT 108 with 7kg (it's rated 5-7kg). It is about 9ft long and is light enough to cast all day It will throw a 60 gram halco slice so far ya can't see where it hits the water .

I have to agree with Rumpig.

My old 10ft Ugly is the best thing I ever bought. Penn 850 hooked up to her, and I can cast light to heavy weights, and the thing has a ton of grunt down the business end for the huge trevors

Gidday Phil, great blanks aren't they!!! :D
I bought mine for $250 second hand as an overhead spin rod, it's an absoloutely gun rod I can tell you, after lugging my FSU5120 round for a couple of seasons this thing seems like an absoloute dream, it'll be getting a hell of a work out next season when I've got my own car ;)
I've got a TSM IV with 15Lb on it at the moment but I might get an Abu 6500c4 and put 12lb on it and put 25-30Lb on the TSM and use that exclusivly on the FSU.

Cheers

rumpig get a abu 6600C5 MAG-X if you can, they are $199 from Steve at Let's go Fishing at http://lgf.sea-angler.org he dosn't list the C5's but just email him and ask steve@letsgofishin.com.au , this is one of the furtherest casting reel you can buy, or you may choose a non-levelwind Abu 6500C3CT Mag-Elite which is capable of casting upto 300yds (with specialist rods and 4-6oz lead), also ask him if he has Rocket oil for the bearings too or where to get it. you may also consider smooooth drag washer for your abu, i have them i cannot praise them enough, their the best!

and spool you 6500C4/6600C5 MAG-X abu with 0.35mm mono line no thinner (otherwise overruns will occur frequently) and you will cast further than you ever dreamed of

Funnily enough there is a preferred length for off the rocks spinning, and a preferred taper. Like the length should give the angler the effort advantage, rather than the fish, and should give strength in the butt to allow the angler to give the fish heaps to get things over quickly.
That length happens to be in the 10/11 foot range and fast taper. This gives a good length for long casting, enough butt to work on the fish and adequate length to control the fish close to rocks.
Whether you use graphite or glass is up to you but in my lifetime I don't thing I've met anything as effective as Ugly sticks for the job. One criteria often forgotten is plain straight out toughness. Ability to take a beating. Uglys shine there.
Of course they are heavy, but hell anglers are strong. Max

I like the Snyder Glass MT range, even though they are old technology! I think the FMT 96 or 108 will be the choice! Thanks Fatman n' all, Andrew.

I use a Shakespear 1.8 spin rod , can cast 5 to 25gram lures no worries & I use it off rocks ,in boats , off jetties & in the river . Depends on how big the prey is .
Cheers .

Fozz, I have a similar length spin rod but thought it a bit short for the rocks. How do you go landing fish off the rocks - long handled net maybe? Andrew.
