Whos got what sort of sounder and what is the opinion of the Navman colour sounders. I'm looking at getting something around the $700 mark and would appreciate any advice

Most cheap colour sounders are just that; a cheap version of a good thing. I would say either buy a really good version of one of the new Lowrance LCD sounders for a few less dollars, or (the harder option to gain approval for) up the budget a couple of hundred and grab one of the new Lowrance colour units, either the X-102-C or the X-107-CDF. I've got the 107 and it's magic.

Cheers,
NICK.

it's worth paying the extra money & upgrading to the 4.8m dowel. ;D

But size isnt everything....if I get the 3m in carbon fibre then I have more length plus better sensitivity.

If the budget is stretched then I think a better quality grey scale sounder is better. The Garmins are also good I have a FF240 on my boat and my mate is a guide and they all use the 250C. On my last trip up to Weipa I was very impressed. The other thing is that if if they last up there then they're good units.

It depends if you are using it for deepwater or inshore too. I wouldn't go for a 250C for serious deepwater stuff.

Learning to read what you see is more important than all the colours, but I agree, they look really pretty all those colours.
Heres a couple of sounder posts worth a read.
