$1,094,997 for 24 Queensland recreational fishing projects

The Australian Government has allocated up to $1,094,997 for 24 projects in Queensland under Round 1 of the Recreational Fishing Community Grants Programme.
Australian Fisheries Minister Senator Ian Macdonald said the funding is part of $2.6 million the Government has approved nationally for projects to make a day on the water even better.
"Fishing plays such an important part in the lives of so many Queenslanders, and it is important that we help foster a sport that is so vital to our economy and lifestyle," Senator Macdonald said.
"Over 3.6 million people in Australia go fishing at least once a year, and 24 per cent of Australian households contain at least one recreational angler.
Queensland’s successful projects include:
• The Burketown Barramundi Fishing Organisation which will receive $50,000 to restock a popular fishing location.
• Sunfish Queensland, which will receive up to $65,880 to run Kids Fishing Adventure activities at 20 locations throughout the state, providing fishing instruction and practical sessions for children.
• The Bundaberg and District Artificial Reef Association, which will receive up to $44,000 to increase the fish habitat at Cochrane Artificial Reef by deploying more than 200 concrete modules to provide greater fishing opportunities for anglers.
A list of the 24 successful Queensland projects is attached.
Senator Macdonald also announced applications for Round 2 had opened and would close on 17 March 2006.
He said the grants would benefit not just recreational anglers and families, but regional communities, tourism operators and the general public.
