Turtle researcher says Moreton Bay 'toxic'

A Gold Coast researcher investigating the affects pollution has on sea turtles has labelled Moreton Bay, in south-east Queensland, as "toxic".

Griffith University PhD student Jason van de Merwe is researching what affect crop dusting, sewage, fertilisers and stormwater run-off has on endangered loggerhead and green turtles, which inhabit waters off the state's south-east.

In coming weeks, Mr van de Merwe will have preliminary results from blood and tissue samples taken from sick and injured animals.

"Moreton Bay is quite toxic," he said.

"There's a lot of rivers that run into there.

"Obviously it's very close to agricultural and industrial areas, so there's lots of pesticides, heavy metals and things like that which are making their way into the waterways and then making their way into the sea turtles through feeding."

How can he be allowed to make such a huge statement when he hasn't even STARTED his research. [smiley=furious2.gif]

I recall that smewhere arout 12 to 15 years ago they were saying the same thing about Sydney Harbour and everyone ignored it including Government. Now look at it ............. Sydney Harbour is closed to pro fishing and rec anglers are being warned not to eat seafood from it.

Is this the beginning of the end for the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay? ? ? ? ? Time and further polution will tell.

I hope this 'student' ,with his green-eyed preconceived assumptions gets a big FAIL in his phd >:(

go to page 74 and Bris is as 'pristine' as the derwent river in Tassie.
and yes Derek ,sidknee 'knew' of the pollution levels ,and guv't big-biz did SFA..... >:(

But IF the Sidknee Harbour was made a Marine Park/NFZ ,would that have stopped the pollution??....??....
