It had been a long time since I had taken the 4.8 center console out wide to get it dirty so I thought it was about time. The last bunch of trips I had been out on were with JT and even though I always enjoy fishing with JT you get to a point where you start to miss being in control. By that I mean driving and positioning the boat and also fiddling with the electronics, so I passed up an opportunity with JT and got the 4.8 set up for offshore.
I was looking a bit sad there for a deckie until I met up with good mate brenden at school drop off. I asked him what he was doing here as he was supposed to be on shift. “Nah took it off”, he said. “Well that’s great, want to go fishing tomorrow?” and that was that as I now had a deckie.
We left the Rosslyn Bay ramp early to try for an early grunter bite. We would head up around the pinnacles which is about 40km’s north, try for a grunter, then jig some livies and then head north east to try for some reefies.
We arrived at our mark in quick time with minimal swell. We were quick to get baits down and pretty much hooked up straight away. I landed an undersize grunter which was a great sign and on the next drift Brenden put our first keeper in the boat which made us relax a bit more. The very next drop and I got smashed. Some big strong runs straight up had me calling shark but then it slowed and started to put in those big thumping headshakes. I changed my tune to cod before a big pinkish body lay boatside. I looked around for the gaff but couldn’t see it so the hands went straight in the gills and pulled it onboard. Both myself and Brenden were in shock as it was a great capture while we were chasing grunter. 9.5kg of large mouth nannygai had us high fiving and on the mat he went. 87cm and a new PB and it was taken on the new squirtz fly from PE Tackle.

http://imageshack.us/a/img820/4193/dsc0704va.jpg

We spent the next few hours adding to our tally of grunter before we started jigging livies.

http://imageshack.us/a/img163/2379/dsc0711j.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img443/9783/dsc0707m.jpg

With good shows our spirits were high but we were disappointed as they were hard to come by. We wound up with about 8 pike and a couple of these mongrel looking things which had a bit of go about them and were shiny so we put them in the tank with the pike.

http://imageshack.us/a/img442/9006/dsc0736o.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img33/7417/dsc0735k.jpg

We were flying on the way out to the reef with already a great feed secured in the esky. Imagine our surprise when we started drifting the fern country and struggling to lose bait and get bites. The next 2-3 hours were like this and all I could think is we should have stayed at the wreck and get some more grunter. We found a new bit of ground in the dog leg/cock & balls area (a local name for a gps contour) and I had clean forgot about the pike. Well the dead baits weren’t working so I put a pike down. Immediately it got nailed and up comes a nice trout. I put another on and up comes a red throat. By this time Brenden goes “stuff this give me one of those” and before long he is hooked up as well. Imagine our surprise when a red hits the surface and was hauled aboard. We pretty much turned each one of those pike into a decent fish until we had the mongrel looking things left.
http://imageshack.us/a/img577/3281/dsc0716c.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img19/8562/dsc0720ci.jpg

I put one down and do you think I could get a hit on it…..heck no. After a while we decided to hit one final mark on the way home which was a wreck. I looked at the final live mongrel and said to Brenden “do you want this” as I was going to through it over the side. “Yeah give it here” he said. We drifted across the wreck and received not much interest at all. We were well away from it when Brenden mentioned “these bloody mongrel things must be the pox of the ocean” and right on cue he got smashed. Thumping headshakes had us hoping and Brenden was rewarded with a final red emperor for the trip. We did piss our selves laughing that it was caught on the “mongrel thing” and it topped off a great day on the water.

Pic of the wreck we pulled this red off

The livies definitely saved us out wide this trip with nothing interested in our dead bait, not even the hussar which drive us mad normally. The squirtz flys I was using from PE Tackle went really well and also nailed there fair share of grunter, I was also impressed with the hookup with the new prescion point hooks they were rigged on. Overall it was a fantastic trip with great company and it was great to get the center console back in the game and I love it when a plan comes together. Cheers.

Hey josh, yeah rig the gangs up my self. Normally use a flat screw driver and hammer to spread the eye then use shogun rolling swivels between the hook. Haven't had a swivel fail yet so the shoguns seem to be the goods. Then just tap the eye closed with hammer on the concrete. I do it like this because the hooks seem to be high tensile. Let me know if u want any more info.

No pics of the mongrel things lump sorry, like a little trevally but more slender, I think Jt jigged a couple on his last trip as well. They have got some go about them they took a bit of chasing down even with the scoop net :) were tuff as nails

Those hooks seem great Sean, razor sharp and with the gang I seem to get a high hookup rate too.

What day was that Boony? We ran wide east on Saturday with a northerly swell. Wind came up by about 11am so we can home into a southwester all the way back to Barren. Could only run at about 25 kph. Clean blue water started at 55 km east.

I was out there Wednesday the 30th of January. Was perfect all day and only copped a bit of chop in the bay.

As for the fern country.... I'm no expert and someone might be able to help me out but all it is is soft fern weed I guess. Dead giveaway that your fishing it is that you can feel your rig drag through it. It does look different on the bottom compared to a hard coral bottom as well on the sounder. Sometimes it can look like there isn't much there depending on what stage of the tide because the tide does push it over and when the tide change happens it may stand up a couple of meters or a meter off the bottom. That's about all I got :)

I meant that miners get to fish during the week, but you also do it from a HUGE boat that most people could never ever afford. That boat can go further, out to the very best grounds, it has the very best sounder & GPS to find the best fish, a miner would have the very best tackle & lures money can buy. All these things mean miners catch more fish. Simple.
Think u should check ya Facts mate before u mouth off on such things

What a load of crap. I've got all of that and it would take me a month of Sundays to catch fish like Boony! It's knowledge, putting the time in on the water, skill, dedication and a certain amount of luck that gets the results.

By the way ..... I'm not a miner!!

JT's boat is only a 5.5 and mine is only a 4.8. Our fishing gear and electronics are only average. It's the extra yards we put in. Meaning research, research, research. The best saying I have ever heard is that "most fish are caught in the living room" which means researching the net on gear etc, get on google and locate possible fishing grounds, rigging lures, sorting tackle. Talk to everyone u can about that particular area u want to fish and ACTUALLY LISTEN TO ADVICE GIVEN. If u think someone is just going to hand over awesome fishing spots that they have done the hard yards for then your head is stuck somewhere where it shouldn't be.
I could quite easily tell u where I have been getting my king from and a few other spots but why should I? If u come across genuine (and don't act like a sissy whinging cry baby) then maybe u might get some help. Your first port of call might be to go in and see the boys at Barra jacks rocky, tell them u are struggling to find a fish and maybe the might help u out with some advice on tides, spots and what gear. The more u whinge and carry on the less help u will get.

If I could increase my income by $50k a year, watch my catch go through the roof.
It would mean a good seaworthy boat, with a fish-finder (I don't have one ATM), it would mean a electric motor, and as a lure fisherman I believe it's almost essential.

It would also get me a 4x4 vehicle, which would get me into the best spots.

I think I'm a bloody good fisherman, but my low income prevents me from getting to the best spots, finding the fish and making the most of it.

If I worked in the mines I'd be catching heaps.

if your that keen to do it why don't you just go and do it instead of complaining to everyone about it and if not just stop wingeing about it

Because I can't get there. I'm not a miner so no 4x4. So I can't launch where these 'gurus' go. So I have to launch 30kms away and travel in a 30yo 12" tinny rig. I have no Sounder, so I can't find the bait, which means I can't find the fish. So I just have to guess and wing-it. Results so far from ,winging-it; Nil.

Geez i wasnt in the mines when i grew up on the coast my first boat was a seafarer half cabin and not having all the gear as u say will get u the fish and u don t need a 4x4 to get to these places that we go to . Fistroy is the fistroy how many ramps are there. If u can t get to Broadmount have u got a statesman i put in there in a commodore just take ur time plenty structure don t worry about a GPS ........ ... And ur more then welcome to fish beside me if u can follow me no probs.
ME thinks that lots of people are putting a word out to help u and throwing how much they earn at them won t get u far . People have bills and kids and families .

I have not had a boat since 1997. I've recently bought a 30yr old 12" Brooker, I've saved for it. It took 16 yrs to get there, but I got there on min wages. I went without, I had no hot water for 2 years and I rode a push bike to work every day for 3 yrs. I lived on tins of Baked Beans, Why because I wanted to go fishing and catch a fish or two. Not catching any fish but I'm on the water. Job half done. Giving it a red hot go.

I still think I should have bought another house as I still got my 91 model tinny .....work hard save harder and NEVER judge people for what they got ....oh and I could catch whatever I liked , where I liked ...tight lines and good luck improving your fishing skills :) , one day you may fish as good as a miner ( jokes )
