First off all, let me introduce myself. My name is Steve and I am located in the south western suburbs of brisbane.

I have been on the forums for a lil while reading and thought I would finaly pay for a membership :P

I just bought my first boat a few days ago. It's a 3.75m Quintrex tinny.

It has a new home-made galv trailer and the boat seems to be fairly old aswell.

I looked over the trailer and their is no compliance plate nor vin from what I can see. Looking over the boat I cannot seem to find a manufacturers plate etc.

My questions are:

What do I have to do to get the trailer registered?
I can't seem to find a build plate/manufac plate on the boat… Should it have one?
Do I contact Quintrex to get the info for the boat?
I have a 30hp 2 stroke merc at home, will that be too big/powerful for the boat?

To get trailer registered you'll need a compliance plate and lights fitted. Getting the plate might be hard since somebody needs to put their nuts on the block saying the trailer conforms to relevant regulations.

Without it you won't be able to register the boat

Never had any dealings with them but from what I've heard you might be waiting a while

Yes, I'd say that's a bit much for a 3.75m. Max for that size boat is about 20HP

We had the same problem, quintrex on an old trailer, was easy, just took it to local chassis & trailer specialist, they affixed ID plate, new chassis number for trailer, got it weighed and measured, all done and dusted. The boat was the same, no data plate, applied for one and got numbers off Qtransport, easy. You just end up with homemade for the make of the trailer and the boat will be length and make and they can invent the rest.

Get a plate from Qld Transport (any customer 'service' centre will have them), under make put homemade, put a weight under 750kg on the plate, and go and register it. Its not hard. A 30 on that boat would get up and boogy but I cant see it being a drama. No compliance plate on the boat will be your biggest drama.......

Interesting, I thought all trailers had to certified/inspected as compliant. So ... let's say (heaven forbid) the coupling broke while towing and it causes an accident and/or damage/injury, who's gonna wear the blame for that? I can't see any insurance company footing that bill.

If your worried about the insurance drama then you better go buy a brand spanking trailer thats registered from the factory!! otherwise you do as the others have said!! you dont need a roadworthy for a trailer under 750kg, I rekon yours falls in that catergory! as for the boat its all too easy mate!! as long as the last owner was legit you wont have a problem!!

Welcome to Ausfish

What do I have to do to get the trailer registered?
You need get one of these:
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Trailer-Light-Board-7-Pin-Flat.aspx?pid=284676&menuFrom=8034#Description

Then fill out one of these:

http://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF3970/$file/F3970_es.pdf

And I think one of theses as well:

http://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF3518/$file/F3518_ES.pdf
Than you take all of that paper work to Mains road department and pay some fees.

Once you did all of this
let us know 8-)

Nup , homemade as the make is the easiest way to do it.I did it a couple of years ago when I modified a sealink trailer

Thanks for the help guys, trailer is all registered. Boat is registered too. Qtransport were able to provide a HIN.

Bought LED Nav lights for her today, Anchor Light, Switch Panel, Padded seats a battery and box. I just want to take her out on the water now, due to moving next friday I don't think it will happen till I arrive in Rockhampton.

Next thing to buy will be a Garmin 551s, I definitely want one before I start to explore and venture into water I am not familiar with.

I have the Garmin 551s and only used it twice but I am impressed that I can see the screen in daylight with polarised sunnies on. Normally I can't see any screen device with them on.

It's not as good as with them off but it is usable.

Only problem I am finding is that the Garmin and the Navionics don't always agree with the actual placement of the beacons. The two gps say keep left but the beacon says keep right.

When in doubt I have stuck to the correct side of the beacon in spite of the gps and found no hard lumpy bits.

But I don't feel comfy ignoring the chart even though I do know that banks move around. Reading this your probably thinking the fool has got the wrong direction of bouyage, but I haven't.

I will get a comfort factor after I have a few tracks recorded... At least I know they were good back when I did them.

As far as the motor goes, not sure if it helps, but my 3.7 stessl has a max hp of 25, but I guess it's the weight that matters more and that max is 55kg. I think the 30 would be around that.

Attached the bait board today to see what it's like. I ended up mounting it to the row locks, Personally think it is a great spot in the centre of the boat.

Also attached the padded seats, Next will be to mount the LED Nav Lights. I have a mate fabricating me a piece of stainless as we speak to mount the toggle switch to at the rear of the boat.

The battery I got was quite large so I ended up taking her back and bought a Remco AGM 17A, Deep cycle battery. The problem I am having now is where to mount it away.

I was thinking about making a bracket and mounting it up under the floor at the front of the boat... Thoughts?
