Hey all

I was looking at getting a rock/surf combo in the 10' 6-10kg range. Would be primarily for casting slugs and poppers off the rocks in the 40 - 80g range.

What is a decent setup on the cheap end of the market?

I was thinking of a Penn powerspin combo or accord. I've had a powerspin combo for years in the 2-4kg range and has never let me down. But Trying to get away with spending around $150 due to budget and to see if I actually enjoy this type of fishing before I spend decent money on a combo. I have a couple of alveys for surf fishing but I find that it's easier using a spinner for slugs etc.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
Nick

Is that $150 for both rod and reel ? Not much choice for that but the hands down winner for best cheap rod for spinning is the Penn Big Game. That doesnt leave much money though for a reel but i would start with that. Maybe use a reel that you already have on it.

yeah aiming for 150 but might end up at about 200. I reckon the big game rods would be unstopable. I was mucking about with one in a tackle shop not long ago. Unfortunately I don't have a reel to suit. Cheers

Mate, if it was me I would be taking myself off to the mart with the big A or even K mart and having a look at the 12' range. My favourite Jew/ Tailor rod was bought at one of these shops.Get onto Ebay and pick up a cheap spinning like this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TOKUSHIMA-SG7000-HEAVY-DUTY-SURF-SPINNING-FISHING-REEL_W0QQitemZ200437142719QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_15?hash=item2eaafc14bf
but do not pay more than $30 or so. and pick up some braid like this
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PEX-DYNEEMA-BRAID-FISHING-LINE-20LB-500M-550YDS-GREEN_W0QQitemZ120527767768QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_S port_Fishing_Tackle?hash=item1c1003c8d8

and there you go a cheap but effective weapon for use off the rocks for tossing slugs and H.B's

Silstar Crystal Power Tip - PC 1202 SFM - 10'6" - 8-12kg. Around $120.
This is a very nice rod for the $, will stand up to some abuse on the rocks too.
The reel is your call, though a rock spinning reel should be as tough as possible, maybe price a Penn Spinfisher 7500SSM, or check out a good 2nd hand reel. As stated, try all the retailers you can and see what you can come up with as a package. You may blow your budget a little, but at least your gear will be reliable.
Cheers.
