After years of weighing up the options for a larger boat, have just about settled on a Stabicraft 589 SC. However, before making this considerable investment, interseted in anyone's opinion who has experience with this model or simular.

What size engine, the recommended is 115. Is this big enough? Does the shelter cab need trim tabs? How does the 589 perform compared to the 609?

With all respect, just to say they are ugly is not really helpful. Hey, who would buy the largest selling brand tinnie (or its cousin) based on looks? I actually prefer the Stabi's looks to both of them.

All opinions most welcome.

Thanks in advance,
John

Not experienced with them, but I'd have thought a boat that big would want a bit more HP than 115. I'd have a good look at Stabicraft if I was getting a big boat, though, and I don't think they are ugly at all.

i got a 529 frontier with a 90 and id like to have atleast 100 or 115 its max is 100hp. The 609 labours when loaded up with a 140 4 stroke on the back so id be going at least a 130hp 4 banger or etec.

Vertico,
No doubt your right. A couple of years ago I demo'd a 609 with a 150 E-tec. Unfortunately I thought the combination sucked as I didn't like the snappy (and to me difficult to control) power band of the 150 E-tec mated to a relatively lighweight hull just seemed all wrong to me. I propmised myself if I got the Stabi I'd go 4 stroke. So if you go bigger than 115 doesn't this really only leave a 150 Yammy or 140 Suzie as the options?

A charter operator once said to me.... all this discussion about what brand and technology motor to buy, why don't people just go with what 90+% of the commercial operators use? Good point I always thought.

John

John,

My old man just took delivery of Stabi 609 with a 150 honda. Gave it a fair work over xmas.

150 4 banger is right on the mark for this boat. Heaps of grunt and it topped out about 36 knots on the gps.

It would benefit from tabs, flatten the hull a bit at lower end of the plaining spectrum.

Awsome sea boat, dry as and very comfortable.

If i were you i'd go 130hp on your boat with tabs.

Suzuki make a 150 and 175 4 strokes. Honda do a 135 and 150.

Thanks for that, most helpful. I take it he's pretty happy with it. Any comment on the often stated negative that they bang a bit and are a bit noisy due to the slap against the pontoons?

John, I don't have any exp with a stabi, but send a pm to Smithy, he's is bigger than what you're looking at though, but he'll be able to give you a run down on how much they bang. When he first got it, I think he said it was a surprisingly soft ride for an alloy boat.

140 suzuki would be plenty of power for the 589 mate
a 135 honda would also be ok :P

mate had a 609 stabi that originally came with a 200hp Yammi 2 banger on it. (came over from WA).
he replaced it with a suzuki 140 4 banger and it was brilliant.
