Or spend $300 on a rotary polisher. Don't buy a cheap crappy one, you'll get what you pay for...

It makes it much faster. I do my 685 every 6 months or so, but it still takes a bit of time.

timi..do u use a variable speed one ? I bought one but have not got around to using it yet...interested as to what speed gives the best results.

I go at about 1500 revs. I know I could go faster, but I worry about the friction and resultant heat...

I bought a Makita because I like the handle set up, infinite speed control, and I can change the bushes myself.

1200W 600-3000 revs.

Does a great job. The part I like most is that I can put a layer of polish on the boat, and not worry about it getting too hard to take off by hand. If it takes me a couple of days to get back to it, doesn't really matter, the polisher makes short work of it.

Cheers,

Tim

G'day

I use a Hitachi SP18VA, lightest in its class, and very robust. Retail just under $400.

It's variable, usually run it between 1800 and 2200

Speed probably depends on what you are buffing and what polish you are using. For example, if using a wax polish on wood, you actually want a bit of heat and friction to melt the wax into the wood surface. As for high gloss boat surfaces, speed probably doesnt matter as much as just removing the dried polish/wax etc.

like blackened, i have a company that uses these machines flat out every day.

my suggestion to a do it your self buffer upperer( cut and polish). is NOT to use a rotary, unless you have experience with that machine.

get one of those GMC random orbital sanders or R/O's. a range of quality pads is available for the machine.

you actually get a better finish with an R/O. its just more time consuming as the pad surface is smaller. and no swirls!!!!!!!!!!1

if i'm doing a cut and polish for a car yard, its out with the rotary and done in no time.

but for a private client, i use the r/o and do a full paint correction.

the risks in using a rotary are massive if you dont have full control, you can burn the fibreglass, the machine can take off and rip all the deck hardware off in its way.

none of these issues with a r/o. you would have to hold a r/o in the one spot for minutes to get it to burn
