Hello Fellas,
Looking to upgrade the old Lowrance unit in my boat and am faced with a few questions. I need a GPS with mapping and would like something with a larger screen 7"+. I have done a little homework and have narrowed down to 4 brands.
Garmin 4008
Furuno
Lowrance GlobalMap 7200
Lorenz Panoramic 8HD

I really dont know how much difference there is between the models can anyone shed some light as there is some price difference between them all. Maybe someone owns one o these and does or dosnt like them for what ever reason. My needs are
1)Large Screen
2)Colour Sounder.
3)Map

Budget $2000

Any help appreciated.

Marty

I have not got that model Garmin and I do not know anything about the other 3 but make sure you see the Garmin G2 Vision Card Charts in action before you make your final decision.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference, I have a Garmin, and I am sure there is a dozen better products on the market, but they are very easy to use (a plus usually) but I have always had Furuno gear in the past and would happily purchase another one, so there is no real yes/no answer, just buy what look s the goods for you.

Two things to look for

1/. The more pixels you have the better the detail is to read

2/. Try to get one that is NMEA2000 compliant so that if you update the motors on your boat information from the motors can be diplayed on the GPS

For me it is all to do with the charts. Navonics charts are the way to go. They fit Raymarine, Furuno Navnets, Humminbird and Lowrance. For me the choice would be Lowrance or Furuno. I went Lowrance for my boat as all my data was allready Lowrance data.

Smithy, I have also decided to buy the Lowrance at the moment there is a price reduction at BIAS so I will be purchasing. Althought the screens on the Garmin and different views are very impressive I cant justify spending that much. Instead the Lowrance with map should cost me around $1600. Thanks for your input fellas.

You could nearly get a Garmin 3210 with a 10 inch screen for that money, easy to use and very impressive feauters

Hey Mick,
I looked at the Garmin and I thought it was priced around $3,400? I will check it out again.
