I went for a solo mission on Saturday morning to an inshore reef off tweed. I Finally managed to pin a good squire on a softy (45cm). This reef rises up from 30 metres to a peak of 22 metres and usually holds a good baitball. had another fish on briefly before it managed to free itself. I was using my bowmount leccy to steady the drift and allow my lure to sit vertically in the water as i covered the reef.
Had a visit from a dolphin that seemed to think i was a feeding station......when i accidentally jagged a small wrasse looking fish it scooped it up when i released it and so he/she decided to just hang around the boat for the next few drifts. I hooked onto something a bit better.....probably a snapper as it was giving those solid headshakes and short spirited runs.....I noticed the dolphin has disappeared and wondered what it's up to, then the fish makes a much faster/harder run and bricks me.......bloody dolphin got it I'll bet.....sure enough, by the time i've wound up my line and found half the leader missing, up pops the dolphin from the same general direction >:( bloody flipper stole my fish.......I told him he should #%&* off so he went and got some heavy's.......a bloody great pair of humpbacks has cruised up on me so I grab the mobile phone camera and I've got a display happening some 50 feet away......which makes you realise how small a 4.55 poly is.....I stop filming to don my lifejacket because they have decided to have a closer look at me!!!! :o the sounder goes black and the water beneath the boat is an eerie greenish white as the great beast rolls on its back and blows bubbles under the boat....and I'm waiting for disaster....all ok, it glides under and away to play with it's buddy at a more comfortable distance..Whew! 20 minutes later.......I'm making another drift when another pair surface about 30 metres in front of me.... this pair just cruise by at about a boat length and give me a bit of an eyeball. :o after this i figure its time to go....and my dolphin "buddy" heads back to his pod.
Great day on Saturday and I suppose a trip to remember even if all the fish were not in the esky ;)

Yes, It was too close for me. I was keen for them to just sit by and do their thing but when they came to me I was a little unsure. no, not willy the white whale, just the underside of him.
