    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

all pretty feel good for the local bloke here

fact is on a saturday bcf is a lot busier then the local shop, local guy may be selling high quality gera but generaly this is low margin stuff

all the while bcf is taking their low value high margin sales

big shops cost more to run, in our business the stock holdings we carry add about 15% to overheads bigger overdrafts to maintain, bigger yard, more costs etc
    another thing to consider.

Well there is another win for BCF. I use a partucular sp, the local guy is usually out of them and also charges 20% more for them than BCF..

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

I've been "walking into local" fishing shops for nigh on 13 yrs now and not once have I felt welcome...................more like walking into a Catholic bar in Ulster in a British uniform.

I once plugged a local store here on Ausfish, for their fantastic reel servicing, and despite that, they still look at me as if there's a smell under their nose whenever I go in to buy bait or bits and bobs. Whether that's because they know that my rods and reels were bought elsewhere, should be irrelevant............any sale is a good sale, no matter how small.

Doesn't matter if the "local" is on my doorstep or is in another location when I am out of town, they all seem to have their "hangers on" leaning on the counter, and if you ain't one of them, then you might as well talk to yourself.

BCF? Well, I think their prices are absolute crap, compared to K mart or Big W, but then again, I don't buy specialist gear, and mainly fish bait, so the latter's 4 buck deep divers, and what placcies they stock, serve my purpose.............at least some bugger talks to you at BCF, even if they don't know what the feck they're talking about

My observations re "local" or "small guy" tackle shops strike me as very strange considering that fishos as a whole seem to be a friendly and open bunch when out, on, or near water..................seems there's some kind of "elitist" thing going on in small stores that I have visited.

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

BCF back in Browns Plains QLD was ok. Service was ok, price always good (bigger companies have better buying power).

Over here in Perth, the local BCF guys are beyond a joke. I've been in there twice, asking where to find something... all they can do is point a finger & I end up not finding what I am after. They all don't have a clue about fishing, boating or camping. They are well under the age of 20 & have no customer service skills whatsoever.

I'm no longer going back there. However, I still don't feel comfortable going into the local Tackle World store here in Perth... I feel inferior... even when I am after specialist equipment (whether that be a stella or saltiga jigging reel etc).

I have stumbled across 1 local small mob over here, which I am happy to deal with.

Gold Coast tackle world was fantastic. Can't wait to get back in Brissie.

    My thoughts only.

So most of you are saying when you get to know you local shop owner he gives you a discount. I found that the same thing happens to me at bcf since I ask for the same guy every time in go there too!!!!

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

I dont mind BCF too much, Yeah they can be a bit exy, yeah they do have some real young workers but they also have mid _ oldies too , Im happy to chat to them all, I find they have almost everything you need in fishing camping and boating and my local store's (springwood, loganholme) have a great bait selection and yes it can be a touch more exy than other places but you will find that you will spend the extra dollars anyway by driving to the preferred bait place's, I have seen many blocks of pillie's at BCF, If I do go in there I know exactly what I want so im not boofed by a salesman/woman and if there is a young worker in there I hope it's a chick thats easy on the eye.
At the end of the day they are just another store selling stuff, if you wanna save by driving all day for the bargain's good luck to ya's!

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

i don't mind bcf, but im a person who will generally go to the closest spot for gear when i need it, sometimes bcf sometimes small business spots...prefer the small spots though as you can always have a good chat with them about the area.
Why am i here at work when theres fishing to be done...

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

If you want to get really excited about prices, crap stock etc, then try the "other" big new player - an....conder (sic). They make BCF look awesome.

In their defence they do have great specials an rods..... don't ask why or how - just shop there on specials!

Their range of lures are absolute cr*p and the branded ones are soooo expensive!

They do however have some good fisho staff.

Kmart have good specials and often have 25% days - good for the lures!

This is for Tackleworld Hervey Bay, not sure if other Tackleworld stores run the program?

When I joined we paid $10 for the card and got $100 worth of points (so $4.70)

I get all my gear price matched through them, and on top of that, I also get my rewards points. I purchased over 3K worth recently from them, thanks to an insurance claim... yeah I like the loyalty rewards now . woohoo

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

I have been going To JV marine for yrs with great service until BCF took over I find they ether dont give a stuff or they don't no what you r talking about nerly all the staff have left & there is leas staff and there prices r way over the top.I bought a rod & reel for $700 down the road and they wouldnt even nock 50c off it they wanted $950 what a joke and if u guys think this a one off well it happens every time & every time i go in its like looking for a needle in a hay stack no staff.
JV had more staff & BLF u would be lucky to see 5people in the store at once. JV Marine was all ways busier. Now u might think were in tuff times & they need to cut back well this happen as soon as they took over and there stock is all ways down for such a big store.
I suppose the way they run this they will follow the ABC centres....

On the subject of local tackle shops snubbing customers, I went to Fish Head at Vic Pt for the first time the other day...

Got smiles from Duncan and Janelle as soon as we walked in the door, headed over to the bait freezer, and Duncan came up and offered his assistance and the latest verbal fishing report, as well as great advice as to the best bait to use and where to go to find some fish. His information was pretty good too. Couldn't be happier. And his frozen bait prices are as good (if not better) as anywhere else! Will definitely go back everytime I use the Vic Pt ramp.
    Well done Fish Head team!

    Re: Your thoughts on BCF

I don't usually go to BCF and in fact, the last time I was there I walked out swearing I would never visit the place again.

I have half kept that promise.

I went there not looking for fishing gear. I wanted a tarp and goggles.

Found the tarp I wanted and guess what. no price !!! Must be free my daughter says... my thoughts tooo.

Went upstairs and found goggles , 1 pair, no price.......... arghh!

Found goggles and fins set.......... NO PRICE........ aarrgghhn !

What does it take to actually put a price tag on something.?????

Young fella asked if he could help, I said " a price tag on the stuff ya want to sell would be good ! ".

He offered to get the price,,,,, had to go downstairs to the checkout etc. I simply followed, accepted the price and muttered again, I will never go back to this store.

Went to local BCF on saturday, not a bad story this-an amusing one.
Got some garlic scent for my lures, cheeky bugger at the counter said"gives you awesome breath if the fish needs a kiss !"with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek.
BCF are o.k if you know what you want, just get in and get out!!!
