Ausfish bass diary. What can guarantee you fish?

After reading Jamies post "I can guarantee you fish" i began thinking about fishing diaries and different weather/ climate conditions that affect fishing and if you could actually scientifically prove if certain wether these conditions affect fishing. The problem with a diary from just one person is the sample size is too small and open to too much bias. However if everyone on ausfish kept a diary then and we compiled the data we could gather quite a large collection. So heres my proposal.

If people post on this thread key information about their catches i will collect the data and at the end of each month give a little statistical report.

    I will need to know;
    The date
    Location (wild or stocked impoundment)
    total hours fished
number of fish caught per boat (group if land based)
land based or fromm an boat/canoe/kayak
time of day (evening, morning, midday, afternoon)
    barometric pressure.

To keep the data set closed we will restrict the species to bass only

It is important that if you contribute data that you report ALL your catches for that month or the data will become biased, even if you catch nothing as we may learn more from these days then from days when the fishing is hot.

If anyone else wants to add to the list of observations we want to record feel welcome.

    Good fishing everyone

Ok i'll kick it off, I had i quick flick down the nerang this arvo from the canoe. The fresh water is seriuosly choked up with weed at the moment so it made fishing almost impossible.

    So results are

    2/10/07, wild, 2hours, 3fish, boat, arvo, 1016 steady

thanks to the mods for making it sticky

This could be a great thing..... i mean a serious reasearch project.

    But

We need some sort of specification for the data set and a specified way of reporting so that the data can be analised...

are there any data base gurus out there.

I mean some stuff is obvious or able to be extrapolated from known data.

date , time and location should yeild all the time tide and moon data.

there needs to be an easy way of expressing a variety of other factors.

air and water temp would be good and easy enough to get

but you get where i'm going.

    cheers

Yeh mate for sure, i'm collecting about 12 variables including weather data from the bom, giving a rough indication of locations ie tweed river or somerset dam etc when reporting data aswell will give me an idea of local atmospheric conditions. If people wish to add water temp i will also include it but i think water temp in itself is too variable as it can change by several degrees throughout a days fishing/thermoclines/shade etc. To start with i want to focus on simple abiotic factors. moon phase, barometer, time of day. Stuff like rainfall air temp aswell will come into play in the long run. But what we will really need most of all is data entries and lots of them. Then i can work out a fish per hour average for individuals and then begin weighting results so i can gain a quantitative perspective of whats a good and bad day.

alright guys go get some fish

Guys, there's a fishing diary website that may be exactly what you are looking for. fishingsolutions.com.au - I put all my catches in there and analyse the results through reports.

Do you need to be a member to get the full display of data or is it just fish length, species etc? What I'm hoping to eventually achieve through statistical analysis is to determine what climatic conditions are likely to yeild better catches instead of a data log entry.
