I susposed everyone's opinion of "expensive" relates to what you have grown up with or how your value compass is set. Top dollar for me is about 500 bucks ... now to some people that would be a starting point and for others (like my old man) he would have a heart attack if he new his last fathers day present (rod & Reel) cost about 400 bucks. I still remember him showing me how to spool mono on to a coke bottle without twisting it and use wine corks to catch meter plus Barra..... we are all conditioned by our enviorment & circumstance to some extent, there is no right or wrong just different ways to skin the same cat.

What a load of pretentious crap.

I never thought I'd see the day when fishos talked about gear the same way that those wankers who swilled wine around their mouths and then spat it out, talked

Perhaps you shouldn't read the tackle section if you're feeling outclassed kingtin. Unfortunately there are bound to be a few tackle junkies in here talking about the things they love - and shouldn't they be allowed to?

Kev ...... I dont see it as being pretentious at all. To me its more a case of people that appreciate fine quality specialist tackle .......... sure you dont need a $700 reel to catch a bream or a trout ..... THATS A GIVEN!- No argument there!
However when you are fishing with quality gear the whole experience of finesse fishing is enhanced in a big way........ & there is a big difference going from a $100 reel or rod to a $500 or $700 one Let me tell you now ..... The comments I get from people that have used some of my gear ( & are not used to that quality) ....... Is all very positive , I can assure you that! ......... & my gear is only above average ....... not top of the tree

You are not likely to see someone sitting on a jetty or a riverbank (soaking a bait) with one of these $700 reels !. The owners will be more often than not - hardcore fishers / tournament anglers that put many many hours on the water casting constantly with ultralight line & lures ....... for what may only be a few fish ..... & hopefully a trophy fish ...... the last thing you want is a stuttering drag
It may sound a little over the top ..... but finesse fishing quite often is about the response that you feel through the rod & reel.
So without appreciating this form of fishing ....... you cant appreciate the tackle!

In the end ..... Its what you can afford & what you value!

& to those that swill & spit wine ......... I'll take a new Daiwa Exist over a bottle of Grange any day

Certainly they should, and just as certainly, I'm entitled to express my opinion. When I express that opinion it isn't because I may feel "outclassed" (as you put it), but precisely because I know my class.

More expensive gear, no matter how good it feels or makes me feel, necessarily means that my catch rates will improve. It doesn't even guarantee that the experience will be more pleasant, although many here do feel that way, and I appreciate that.

I've fished alongside guys with top of the range gear, both shore and boat, and most of them seemed frightened to death to even let their gear out of their hands............drop a reel onto the sand and you would think the world had come to an end You only have to listen to some here who have freely spoken of how their partners would blow a fuse if they knew what they'd spent on gear. I would hazard a guess that my fishing experience is a darn sight more pleasant than theirs, even if they do catch more.

Perhaps my post was a bit OTT, I admit to being that way when I've had a few toddies, (yes, I am human), but when I go fishing with my "middle of the road" gear, I enjoy my fishing experience. I don't worry about deceiving the missus or banging my new certate on the gunnels of the boat and I certainly don't think that catch rate relies on the gear, but more upon the skill.

Look at it this way, is there, or is there not, more to be said for the fisho who has a good catch rate with modest gear, than for the fisho who's catch rate may be only moderately higher with gear 5 times more expensive?

If someone wants to spend 5 times as much, of their own hard earned bucks, pursuing their pastime in a manner that best suits them, then I have no problem with that and wish 'em well. I don't for a minute feel "outclassed" by that. Horses for courses, but I will express how I feel, in the manner that I feel at the time, with regards to anything that sounds even slightly elitist. This in relation to fishing gear, wine, cars or whatever. It's nothing to do with tackle junkies, or any "junkie" who wishes to spend as they wish. It's to do with misinformation and there has been plenty of that here in the past in relation to tackle, particularly reels.

We all have a different approach to our fishing and gear, and I in no way, intended to place my approach above anyone else's. I'm human. Sometimes you hear, in the course of your day, or week at work or whatever, so much crap that eventually a certain innocent word or attitude from someone else is the straw that breaks the camels back. Well last night was one of those nights, for me, so please folks, you spends as you wish and pursue your pastime as you wish, and I will do likewise and try to keep my gob shut in future

I should perhaps have expressed myself more succintly and in a less abrasive manner. My apologies.

Kev ...... why would there be ?

I certainly have never seen anyone praised or denigrated because of the price of their gear ...... when talking about a capture

I've gotta say though ....... Whitey & I cursed a guy who hooked & nearly landed a Marlin off the rocks ....... on his K Mart spin combo We had our custom made LBG rods ...... lever drag game reels etc etc The worst thing ..... He never looked the part

From what I can make out the top shelf gear is designed more for the enjoyment of owning it and the general feeling of smoothness and mechanical excellence built into it. There would be very few situations where it contributes any significant advantage over mid priced options to the fishos ability to catch trophy fish. Most modern mid priced gear is way overkill and very few good fish are lost to mechanical failure of the gear being used. Its usually poor technique or a bit of bad luck

I’m sure if you put 20 reels on a table of various brands all of the same size and sat someone down blind folded and said run them and pick out the best ones.
The results may be quite surprising.

youve never fished the cowpaddock at Arthurs Lake on a long week-end with the doctors/lawers/pollies of the Thomas Cook brigade then. They spend big big bucks on gear, catch f all and then say "you caught those on that"with a baffled look on their faces.

The best (or worst) gear in the world is totally useless if you can't find the fish and get them on the end of your line.......................
Having said that, (recreational) fishing is about fun isn't it?
Who cares how you get your enjoyment as long as it is legal and doesn't harm anyone/thing, except the fish you intend to eat, that is!
    Cheers and enjoy!
PS, heres a little pic for HD spin reel lovers...............
