Outboard Brands
Ok guys lets see which brand of outboard is more popular with the Ausfish members.
If you have a brand that is not mentioned ie: Volvo Penta, Chrysler, Seagull etc please specify.
These results should be quite interesting, Im guessing that some brands might not be as popular as some may think.
Also if you have had any bad experiences with a particular brand let everyone know. There maybe some people around thinking of repowering their boats and this may help them gather some info they may require.

Re: Outboard Brands
Sorry blaze,
Have modified to allow more than 1 option so now others with more than 1 brand can tick more than 1 option.
Cheers Ron

Re: Outboard Brands
Evinrude 25 HP Electric start.
It came with the boat when I bought it (3 months ago), and only had some minor electrical problems with it (loose/bad connections). Its about 18 years old, and goes well.
If I had the choice to upgrade I would put a similar size on (the boat is only stamped for max 25HP), but would seriously think about spending the extra for power trim/tilt and go 4 Stroke. As for brand, maybe Yamaha (I like the popular brands), or Mercury/Mariner.
However, unless this motor shits itself soon, I will upgrade the boat before I get a new motor.

Re: Outboard Brands
Interesting to see the low number of Mariners. The late "Little Rexy" on one of the southern fishing sites was the customs officer for Mercury and he used to say that there is absolutely no difference between the Mariners and the Mercuries except for the colour and branding on the cowl. Even the leg was still a standard black Merc. he used to talk about swapping the cowls over when they needed one brand for a customer over the other.
I have often wondered what the differentiator was meant to be. Is it price? Also, I wonder why you see adverts in some fishing mags for both - must just be different product managers not talking to each other.

Re: Outboard Brands
Charleville- all our old net boat engines 15 and 25s were mariners some are yamahas some mercs all of them lasted.. and nearly all of them are still running. I notice all the new stacer packages are mariner. Must be just marketing mate.?...foxy

Re: Outboard Brands
Surprising that Mercs are running second. Given their reputation as "Black Anchors" its a stigma that still hounds the brand name today, even though no doubt the new engines are just as well built as any other brand.

Re: Outboard Brands
Interestingly the term "Black Anchor" came about because these engines were designed to be used on the large freshwater lakes in the U.S.A. and when they were used in saltwater for a couple of years they basicly became good for nothing else but anchors, this led to disaster for the company and the only way the new improved models could be marketed was through a name change, hence the introduction of the Mariner logo.I've owned Jono's and an Evinrude but my last three donks have been Black Anchors, never had a hicup with any of them.Another thing I've noticed is that nearly all racing boats sport one of these motors on the back.

Re: Outboard Brands
I have 3 types of Outboards and i like all 3 of them & and all different brands and cannot fault them at all
1st one 6hp Yamaha for my little creek boat and i think the Yamaha's are the Mercedes Benz's engines of outboards
2nd one is on my brother boat 40hp Tohatsu and go's like clappers & very tough .
3rd one is 90hp v4 Johnson is great outboard it gets a good work out while being offshore and is tough enough to handled the conditions out their
This is my own opinion of theses outboards
