    axle and hub

Ive got the axle in pic as a spare and pulled it out to change over, there is a difference over the old one with the way the seal sits against the machining, there is a few cm gap with this one so im thinking nothing to hold it in place, it could be all wrong for that type of hub tell me what you think.

it could simply be who made the axle just machined the seal land a bit longer.
as long as the overall length of the axle is the same and the end profile is the same there is no problem.
just get a ruler and measure the ends of the stubs it see that they are the same spacings for the bearings and seal.
the pre rust on the seal diameter is not good tho, where the seal sits needs to be rust pitting free and very smooth.
    hope this helps
    cheers

Nothing at all wrong with that setup, whether the whole axle has been machined down to that diameter is irrelevant, as long as your sealing surface is the right diameter.

    Re: axle and hub

People find problems when the axle is not macined like yours to take the marine seal. #If they are placed over the rough axle, they leak.
You don't have to, but if you take the time to put the retaining cup inside the groove in the seal, they supposedly seal better...
If you still have any concerns, give Craig a call at Marine Trailer Spares 3373 8558, he will tell you over the phone what the macined diameter should be for the seal.
As mentioned above, it looks fine.

Thanks guys, the seal fits on ok, just without the lip hard against it to keep it there, ive always pushed it up as far as it will go then tightened the hub up onto it, which to me seems a 100percent fit. tucking part of it into the cup ill check that out, thats my concern that the seal wont stay where its supposed to.

Rob, Once you work out the right position for the the seal, superglue it in place. That stops it moving.

Rob, put the seal in the hub b4 u put the hub on the axle... the "griptite rings" on th einside of the seal are meant to hold it where it has to be.

and don't forget to get all the black scale of your axle (It doesn't look like it's galvanised, does it??) and give it a few coats of cold gal. right up to the seals. (I fit everything together then paint. Doesn't matter if a bit of paint gets on the seal.

That black scale is pretty hard go get into it proper matey so that your axle shines before the coldgal.
