10 hour service@ 300-400$
10 hour service@ 300-400$ Is it realy necessary? and what is included in this magnificent work?Has the fishing world gone mad? When you buy a car you get your first service free @ 5k km what is this 10 hour service sounds like an extortion.....
Very fishy

Ahoj,
Ask them what they do exactly for that money. #When you find out please post here.
Apart from changing the gearbox oil (and engine oil if four stroke), there shouldn't be that much to do. #Maybe check the ignition timing, throttle/shift linkages, and fuel filter. #Can't see how there'd be more than an hours work.
When they come up with the statement about "it's not the same as a car - you don't want to break down on the water", I know they're struggling to justify the high prices.
I'm in the wrong business [smiley=cry.gif]

If its a Yamaha 4S the 10 hour service should be free to change the oil.

I got stung $315.30 for a 10 hr service
$31.50 for parts
$283.80 for workshop
10hr service included:
Inspect / Charge battery - both were charged when i put it in
Inspect / Change Engine Oil - after the service i put the boat on the water and the low oil alarm sounded
Change Gear Oil
Inspect / Clean replace fuel filter
Inspect fuel system
Adjust Idling speed
Inspect for leakages
Inspect / Adjust oil pump
Inspect / Clean oil tank water drain
Inspect Pressure control valve
Clean / replace spark plugs - must have cost $31.50 as these are the only parts i can see.
I don't mind paying top dollar for quality work and attention to detail but the oil alarm convinced me that i was ripped off.
The dealership knows its my first boat as i bought it from them... I think they saw me coming. I don't want to name them but i think you'll piece it together after reading timddo's post and the price i paid.
Its a shame but i guess you have to treat all dealers as though they are shifty ####ers.

My 40hp Tohatsu cost "$107.00" for a 10 hour service @ River City Marine. And they spent some time on it adjusting idle pulley, Gear box oil, and tighting everything up.
I know the boys deal with Yammy, Tohatsu and Evinrude. and have 2 top mechanics.
"Great bussiness are built on reputation", some boat dealers are purely in it for the money!
Same went for boat deal others where well over $2000 more for the same type of boat, motor and trailer.

Re: 10 hour service@ 300-400$
I had my intial service done (20 hours):
changed engine oil, gearbox oil, fuel filter, oil filter..complete check of all belts and hoses...changed the anodes on the legs...hooked the logger up to the motor and checked all operations...this if for a V6 Volvo sterndrive....total price...$450.00 for 2 motors..and I thought sterndrives were supposed to be more expensive than outboards.

$180 for 10h service on a 30hp. Afraid its no choice until the warranty expires otherwise void. In my case there are only two certified warranty centres and one of those I wouldn't go to in a fit as he's a arrogant pommy tossbag.
cheers

sounds fishy, I got my first 2 services on my yam 200 4stroke free and rang around for a quote on 100hr major service the dearest i was quoted was $275 all up from yam dealers.
Might pay to shop around cause you don`t have to go back to the guy you purchased the motor to keep your warranty.![]()

Re: 10 hour service@ 300-400$
We have just had a 20 hr service done on a 2003 mercury 60 hp 2 stroke for $189.23 they didn't even charge us for the pre-inspection they did on the boat for us prior to us buying. #We were very happy with the service done at rocklea ( a far bit out of our way but was the closest place between the old boat owner and ourselves)
I would nearly drive out of my way to take it back to these guys. as I felt they did the right thing by us, knowing we were new to boating, it would have been quite easy to have charged $300 to $400.
I guess just like in car servicing there, are good people/agents that do it well and fairly and unfortunately there are those that rip people off. We have the power not to go back and tell our friends who tell all their friends and hopefully put them out of business or pick up their game.
