Re: stinger 580 questions
I just got my 580 and have been out several times in the last few days. It has a 70 hp suzuki which runs very comfortably at 40 kph at 4000 rpm in all conditions i've encountered so far including some ugly keppel bay chop. getting used to using trim tabs is the key to the ride and keeping an eye on your speed (boat seems deceptively quick for conditions). can be a little wet if trim is set incorrectly. i think it needs some more weight up front eg camping gear which is what i got the boat for.

Re: stinger 580 questions
smithy..i did a search on stinger...i cant find your posts
do you have a link?
i assume it was a build problem you had...
maybe a new boy on the chopper gun
i cant see it being a ride issue, they are very similar to the southwind/southernstar
i live in sa and have never even seen a stinger but
i did hear of some probs when they first started many years ago
i have only heard good things lately from their customers

Re: stinger 580 questions
sorry mate still cant find out what you are talking about
that just says ..he had probs and legal letters sent
did a search for stinger by whitchdoctor and came up nil result
it's prolly me and my wrong use of search functions
but i would like to know what the issue was and seeing it was a couple of years ago what was the final outcome
nothing wrong with people posting what they dont like..lessons for us all
dont buy this cat.... it flips over
dont buy this tinni...it cracks

Re: stinger 580 questions
yeah, our main server is down my other email is
jackwaau@yahoo.com
i'm not trying to start a bag stinger topic
every builder has a one-off bad hull now and again, its what they do about it, thats counts
even the raved about u.s. fountains have warrentee work on their hulls
my opinion...i think it would be better for your concerns about your friends boat to be in open forum

Re: stinger 580 questions
kingfisher
i found the longboats
with the delta pad hull [flat center section] #it gives better stability at rest than a v hull while moving about the boat
the hull sits better, seems to cut through the chop more, at anchor than most boats
it takes 2/3 the hp and fuel than a fatter beamed boat
rises quickly out of the hole and will ride better than most boats i have been on
well worth a test ride, you wont be wasting your time
like southwind/southernstar 17' & 19' they have widened the beam to its length ratio
it is still skinnier than most standard hulls
their 723 is a true longboat length to beam ratio

Re: stinger 580 questions
a delta pad is a flat triangle pointy bit at the front of the boat and the base at the transom
the v sections/chines then comes off this
it is an asian feature borrowed for many recent high performance boats
i only know of the sthwind/southernstar 520/17ft [has a wide L/b ratio of 2.7:1 so its hard calling it a longboat]..and their offshore 720/27ft
as well as the stinger 520 that have raised the gunwale height
these are more for the recreational market who like a high gunwale
some people see the sense in keeping the original low sheer design ...
some dont ...its a personal choice
it would take a chapter of writing as to why its not a saftey issue and why yamaha are still building them the same for over 30yrs
they are after all the most built fishing boat in the world
this is an american longboat forum
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/panga_style_boats/
the keel lines of the yamaha designed 580 longboat
there is the option of skeg guards for beaching etc if wanted
bow meets bottom of hull
start of the delta pad

Re: stinger 580 questions
the yam hull has been used for over 30yrs all over the world and were based on jap fishing boats...and feed back on 1000's of hulls made
there were some modification of the early hulls and if there were any querks they were fixed
as to handling..the 22' were designed as a surf boat..to be beached launched and traverse the surf zone to return with a full load and run the break
southernstar has no interest in making mods...they are happy knocking it out as a work boat, prolly because they have a full range of recreational boats
goodwins use a yamaha designed hull...cant see any probs with them if they left the under-water lines alone
the yanks are playing with the under-water lines, smoothing off the skegs and strakes to give better speed and are going to come a cropper in the end
also removing the rear bulkhead and running heavy motors
at the moment they are used in smooth waters...if they ever find themselves in 12 fters...be an "interesting" trip home
dont know much about the hooker except their bigger one has a high L/b ratio but their smaller ones fatten up, like sthwind/southernstar
best way is to take a test ride in a few of them and see what feels right for you
i like longboats..but i've got no brand to push
and several run the delta pad..if you google... # "delta pad" hull #....you will see why its a good idea. that the asian builders came up with 100's of years ago
