chasing mangrove jacks at pumicestone passage
Hi,
Was wondering if any body could give any hints on chasing mangrove jacks in the pumicestone passage area. New to the area so any advice would be helpful.
Also what are your favorite type of lure and what colour do you mostly use for jacks.
Thanks. Please help lol

Re: chasing mangrove jacks at pumicestone passage
Hi Bob,
My fishing around pumicestone passage has mostly been from caloundra side. There are definately jack around though...
Try pelican waters, or up bells creek. Fishing around snags or rocks as they luuuurve their structure, but beware, once hooked they pull like all hell to try and get back in.
Live bait works well for jacks, but if you are going lures you want whatever is going to get you right in close to their homes. Deep diving manns 20+ troll well, i like flats ratz too. Or in the softies try one of those new gulp lures. Tried them for the first time last weekend. No jacks but they work on the flattieds
In short, work bridges and snags in warm weather. If a storm is brewing it seems to turn em on too.
Good luck

Thanks gonegonefishin and tdsk hopefully your advice will help.
Also was wondering where the best place would be to find some live bait for jacks, ie poddy mullet and the likes. Also in the area.

Re: chasing mangrove jacks at pumicestone passage
I don't think so. We dropped in there while we were at Caloundra last month and there were no signs or anything there that indicated you needed a permit for day visits. You need one to camp there overnight, though. The ranger rocked up while we were there and we spoke to him about camping and he didn't ask if we had a permit for day visiting.
We went to the boat ramp, as well, and there is a little creek next to the boat ramp which looked like it had mullet in it where the creek starts to become wider. I wasn't game to throw my cast net in there as I didn't know what was on the bottom. Also saw a few poddy's cruising around near the boat ramp.
Hope your jack hunting goes well. I would like to chase some up while we are there at Christmas.
Cheers
Eleanor
