What to consider when buying a vhf radio

    Hi all,

What should I consider when buying a good VHF radio?

    What brands are recommended?

Where is the best place to mount it - wrt to sounder and gps (inerference)...?

    Regards

    Waterproof.....................

You don't usually get interference with the radio on ya sounder / GPS, but running current carrying cables next to the transducer cable can cause this.

ICOM, is a name that comes to hand. But I have always had GME or Uniden.

have a look at one of our advertisers sites.

Gidday Smelley, this is a work in progress I started last weekend as it is a very common question and one that is worth giving a reasonable answer to.
I have attached a pdf document to this post for you to have a quick squiz.
I have not finished it by any means, in fact I havent even sat back and properly proof read it yet and some Q/A havent been answered fully or added to it yet. However it is a start, I hope to have it finished in a couple of weeks, hope it helps
    Cheers Lloyd

    Pinkpanther or anyone else -

Realistically what are the benefits (in usability / laymans terms) of the icom M402 over the M302, as I am considering the M302.
Most of the gumpf on their site means jack to me apart from DSC which both models have. i.e. the M402 has DSC that meets U.S.C.G. SC-101 and the M302 has DSC that meets RTCM SC-101, what is this?
I am a strong believer in K.I.S.S will the M302 suffice? My boat is a Sig 500C so I ain't going to far offshore.

    Cheers
