    fraser island 18-21st October

    hey folks,

snuck up to fraser for a couple days to chase some large late season tailor and jewies over the weekend. Had been hearing about the dreaded weed from mates and hoped the SE blow would clear it up. Didn't happen. weed from hook point to the cape. Was fishable but very frustrating have to rip weed off line every cast, despite it prevalence fluctuating with the tides. Due to 15-25knot SE we predominately fished the headlands. Cape had bulk weed (see pic) Got good numbers of tailor every session but mostly small stuff 35-50cm. Brother and mate mostly fished tailor slab baits and pillies and I spun with raiders, twistys and tournament tackle stickbaits (from bayfisher) 90% of the time. Both methods accounted for good numbers of fish with less weed when spinning.

Fished into the nights for jewies and bigger tailor, fish seemed to go a bit quiet after dark. saw only one 70 ish tailor caught. biggest we got only went in the mid 50s. Snagged a nice little Bluefin trevally on a 95mm sinking stickbait, great colours on those fish. caught some tings for lunch one day up orchid beach. released most tailor and kept a few for camps feeds etc.

apart from the weed the water temp was up so may have been a contributing factor but still a fun trip with plenty of fish to keep us entertained

    cheers

    Nice work mate.

Hopefully the weed doesn't come back next year as it was a killer!

    Good stuff, mate.

Next time there's a heap of weed, try the Western stretch from Coongul Ck up to Wathumba stretch. The South Easters keep it off the shore, there, generally. From Wathumba to Roonies, though, it'd be weedy as all hell. Then the reverse in Northerlies. Nothing worse than having that crap to deal with.

Either way still a great place to hang your hat.

Yeh cuzza only have a day to go for look elsewhere, shoulda gone the wathumba but had heard of a few cape reports in the previous weeks and was naively hopeful on the weed situation up there aha. Nice place for a drive nonetheless

Anybody been to Fraser or know anyone who has been lately. Just curious if any tailor are still getting caught or of they have cleared out.
