Check the rules before fishing at Clare Weir

Recreational fishers are being reminded to check the rules for Clare Weir, following a number of illegal fishing incidents.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district officer Robert Ibell said Clare Weir is a closed water area, making any form of fishing there illegal.

“The closed water is defined as the 400m area upstream and 400m area downstream from the weir,” Mr Ibell said.

“Most fishers tend to fish downstream from the weir. To ensure you are not within the closed waters, drop a line in downstream from where the powerlines cross the water.

“This area is closed because migrating fish tend to congregate there.”

Mr Ibell said in recent weeks the number of fines being handed out at the Clare Weir had increased significantly.

“Over the past week, QBFP has issued 9 infringement notices with fines to people fishing in the Clare Weir closed waters,” he said.

“Taking or possessing fish from closed waters is prohibited at all times and could land you a $440 on-the-spot fine.

“QBFP regularly conduct patrols in the area, so those doing the wrong thing will be caught.

“Fishers should also be aware that from 1 November to 1 February it’s closed season for barramundi, so any caught in the waters downstream from the Clare Weir must be released unharmed.

“We urge fishers to check the rules at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23 before they go fishing to find out closed waters, closed seasons, and size and possession limits.”
