Three Indonesian fishermen have been fined more than $40,000 and had their boats destroyed for blast fishing in Australian waters.
Two boats were intercepted by Border Protection earlier this month, one at Scott Reef, north of Broome, and the other at Evans Shoal, north-west of Darwin.
Both had chemicals on board, including TNT and detonators, to make small bombs for the purpose of fishing.
The men were charged with illegal fishing and all pleaded guilty in a Darwin court.
They have been fined a total of $43,000 and had their boats confiscated and incinerated by Australian authorities in Darwin and Broome.
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority says blast fishing has not been encountered previously in Australian waters and will not be tolerated.
The fishermen will be returned to Indonesia.

Good outcome. I understand why this practice goes on in Indo as they have fished their waters to death an it is the only way they can get a feed but if these pricks cant catch a fish off scott reef on line they are bloody hopeless. Instead of flying them back they should have made them work off their 40k in fines in detention camps. The government knows full well once they are home they wont see a cent of that 40k and they will go back to the same thing. Desperate people have nothing to loose.
These boats, if you have ever seen one, represent a biosecurity threat as well as a threat to our fisheries. Burning them is really the only way to go - as they are very difficult to sink, and blowing them up, well, isn't that what they were convicted of ?
Lovely to see. They should destroy all boats on the spot that fish illegally in Australian Waters regradless where they come from. Also more submarines, up periscope. Fire
