VRO Question
Hey all,
I want to know 100% that if you disconnect the oil system from a VRO set up that you will not encounter any issues.
I have heard mixed stories some say it will be fine no need to change the pump if it is working and you are just removing the VRO and the others say you need the oil to lubricate the pump and witout it the pump will sieze up.
So can anyone give a definate answer on this ?
I have a '93 50HP Johnson that runs beautifully but the VRO is still half connected so i get the no oil alarms etc and since i run premix i want to remove the harness and take out the VRO tank to reclaim the space.
Thanks

Re: VRO Question
Remove the harness & tank, make sure the oil line on the input side to the vro pump is blocked.

Re: VRO Question
you can remove the VRO from most Johnson/Evinrudes without fear of damage, EXCEPT the motors like the e-tec, (they do NOT mix the fuel and oil) so, they have to have the oil system working, however, the system you have/had is very reliable, just get it fixed and leave it on.

Re: VRO Question
a new vro from the states is a few hundred dollars.
benefit is 100:1 when trolling and 50:1 at wot and fuel lasts longer in your tank unmixed

Re: VRO Question
Thanks Guys,
The system is working I just prefer not to have it.
The theory behind it is great just throw in regular fuel no mixing no mess etc I just prefer to know that there is no chance of the engine ever going un oiled.
Plus gettingrid of the oil tank means i can fit in another fuel tank.
Cheers

Re: VRO Question
I disconnect the VRO over 8 years ago on my V4 Johnson 90 HP. Kept mix at 50:1
I had no troubles just give spark plugs a clean every so often
Hope this helps

But start off right and you'll finish right. There's no comeback when you stick to the truth - and no skeletons!

Re: VRO Question
I have also removed the system once it has shown signs of worry or getting a bit old. You may get a bit of sooting up if doing a lot of low speed work, no petrol engines like it. Not something I do so wasn't a worry for me, but if you do you can get better sparkplugs and quality oil that should help.
