    Yamaha 4S service

I came across this link on how to do an annual service on one of these.

Since I'm looking at 2X70hp, I'm curious how the dealers charge for this annual service including change top & bottom end oil, replace impeller, re-gap plugs.

i will be talking to my dealer next week and should have some info for you then.
The annual service will help you keep your dealer warranty as well. i know i will get them to do mine for that pice of mind..

i have just purchased a new F70 Yamaha to be fitted this week or next week i hope..

    hey Steve
i think the charges reflect the insurance costs / staff / rent and other overheads are one reason they charge a significant fee and not forgetting the factory training and computer diagnostic equipment etc etc.

    Re: Yamaha 4S service

I guess to be fair a good service place will do more than just "nuts and bolts" anyone can do that, most dealers that are authorised agents will know all sorts of little "tricks" that can keep your motor in top shape, rather than just, change the oil, filter, check the water pump and do the gear oil the say, hand over $300, thanks for coming! A true service, if done properly can take quite a long time, this is not to say there is not a few dealers out there who do the very minimum but charge you a premium price, that's where you have to look for the right person to take care of your boat and motor. Alos do not expect to have things "fixed" at a service, if there is something wrong with your motor, tell them!! a simple service may not fix some fault that is not part of what they do, I have seen this thousands of times during my work in the service industry, someone drops in something for a "service" the item is serviced as per the manufacturers spec, the owner picks it up, and is on the doorstep the next day bleating how (say for a car) the lock on the boot is still sticky, or the VHF radio is still playing up (even though they had a motor service) get the idea?

    Re: Yamaha 4S service

Hi Noelm and thanks to all for the feedback so far.

In the video, which looked like an authorised servicer, was struck with how little they did! Other than the stuff I mentioned, they also checked the throttle and shift linkage....that's all! A standard service on my Xtrail costs about 275... but there are about 99 things they have to check, grease adjust, etc. The 4S outboard is actually a much simpler deal, it seemed per the video. So that is why I started the thread.

I should say that as a cruising sailor I am self sufficient for everything. I carry spares and can fix anything on the boat. That's just my attitude toward things mechanical.

Now 275 X 2 to do only the stuff discussed so far seems high to me (after all, the digital data could be read off my NMEA 2000 chartplotter or a laptop) but to keep my warranty sweet I'd live with it. But what if it were 750? Hmmmm. We are all playing the game.. Car Dealers are shifting margins to service. Are outboard dealers doing the same? I'm just trying to understand how the game is being played..

Pretty sure my 100hr service on that exact same motor was @ $600 late last year....

what sort of gear is required to download the data to a laptop, and is it available to buy??

    Hi Qlder1,
It was in the video. Looked like it was a pigtail between the laptop and the data port. I'm sure this is standard stuff(laptop on nmea2000) I'll do some reasearching and post something

    Re: Yamaha 4S service

I would be horrified if thats all they did on a service on my motor or how they treated the motor

I can see by that vid why I don't like qualified mechanics touching my motors (yes there are some great ones out there )

never looked into it but I bet there is a big $$$$ factor to get the program to use the diagnostics cable even if on NMEA

    Re: Yamaha 4S service

Considering the service on your outboard is an annual one (Once yearly) I'd be more inclined to have a reputable service agent service my outboard, was informed by my recent agent that impellers can last up to 300 hours before being changed.

But that is also dependant on how often and how much punishment the outboard is getting and whether the water from the tell tale is showing any signs of impeller wear. My recent service was impeccable to say the least.

The guys gave the lower leg (fin) a lick of black paint and dressed the edges of my S/S prop where their had been some minor indentations, they also replaced the anodes. I'd say the anode replacement is part of an annual service but not the dressing up of the lower leg or S/S prop. What more can I say?

    Re: Yamaha 4S service

$450 each engine minimum. $900 for the 2x 70hp 4-stroke. and at that price compared to what the sell you over the counter is a good price.
I have 2x 100HP 4-stroke. I have done quite a few standard services. I do impeller every 100 hours although I will start running to 200hours as have never had any complaint and when I pull them out they are still brand new($90 locally imported $40). plugs alway replace ($25 each from marine dealer (LFR5A11), $8 each from repco trade price). gerabox lube I now buy in 20ltr drum $165 from brisbane vs $17 for 1ltr local)(won't even get me in 20ltr locally), same with 10w-30 engine oil I buy 20ltr for $165 local 4ltr $40. I bought my filters, waterpump kits, waterpump impellers, new plug seals, anodes, etc from an american yamaha dealer just need the part numbers. saved thousands of dollars. on the rediculous yamaha australia prices. identical parts all definately genuine. I know the support locals 'PLUG' that people may think or go on about after this. but at the end of the day this is how I have to do it as forking out $1000 dollars twice a year for a simple service where they don't really check anything( I'd love to see just one dealer just one as I have never seen it where they actually don't charge you an extra $300 to check carby adjustments etc(time is money and I bet you no one does it properly, if at all)) computers take all the bs out of the equation with carby syncs, mixture, etc but the laptop plays no part in this the motor does it by itelf laptop is for dealer use so when you damage engine the can pull it up and say no warranty because of engine over revving, etc shows them how you treat it.
