Re: Yammy 4 stroke from the states
Is the perice difference enough to be worth it once you include shipping? I'm not questioning your motives, I honestly have no idea of the pros and cons etc..

Just make sure you are 100% with your warranty and if you will have one!!! the overseas thing can make things tricky.

Re: Yammy 4 stroke from the states
I went through this whole thing about a year ago with looking at a Yamaha motor, albeit at the other end of the HP range but by the time I calculated the cost of the motor, freight, GST and the likes by the time I had it on the back of my boat there was only a tiny saving to be had and it sure as hell wasn't enough of a saving to justify the lack of warranty I would have from buying a new one O/S.
I just ended up getting the lowest possible price locally ( which wasn't too hard given the current situation in the marine industry) and now I go out knowing if something were to happen I have a local dealer on my side as well as my factory warranty.
Like I said this was just my experience and it was at the other end of the HP spectrum but I thought I would just share.

No i haven't really got down to the price side of things, also thanks for the feedback Muddy toes, it is just something i am enquiring on i may have the chance to put it in a container that a person is bringing back from the states from a few things he is in the process of buying.

40HP would not be worth the effort.

Re: Yammy 4 stroke from the states
the savings are not substantial enough to warrant a motor that size, and that is from experience, nothing to do with what is said at the local, by all means, go and price the whole deal start to finish, be sure to include all the rigging that they charge extra for, the lack of warranty, then the freight (which will be almost the same as a 300HP) the figures will disappoint you.

Re: Yammy 4 stroke from the states
an art only missing in qld it seems, us new south welshmen have no issues with it
its only in the larger outboards it seems to make any sense, as there are fixed costs irrelevant of what it actually is (broker fees port fees etc)
or bring in a boat and get them to lay a second outboard in its packing crate inside the boat, as its empty space anyway
get on the phone to any yamaha dealer within 1000km of you and see who is the most desperate for a sale you will be surprised and just drive down and pick it up

If your mate has additional space in the shipping container and is happy for you to fill it then I would be seriously thinking about it !!

Re: Yammy 4 stroke from the states
I still don't think a motor that small is worth the drama of getting one from the US, if you do find a dealer that will sell you one, make sure they price a prop, all the rigging, then factor in GST and if your not lucky, quarrantine, no warranty and all the other add ons, then see if it is worth the small savings you might perceive you are getting, a 200+ HP and we are talking real savings (% wise)
