Fishers welcome Queens birthday holiday decision

Member for Cleveland, Mark Robinson today welcomed the announcement by the Newman LNP government that the Queen's birthday long weekend will remain in June.

"It is a common sense decision to keep the Queen's birthday holiday in June and a decision that the Redlands community has welcomed," Dr Robinson said.

"The nationally significant annual fishing event 'The Wilson Moreton Bay & Offshore Family Fishing Challenge' hosted by the Redland Bay Amateur Fishing Club faced extinction under the former government but now will be able to continue due to the announced change.

"The Fishing Challenge has a 21 year old history in the Redlands and is one of the most well known major fishing events in Australia. Its continuation means mums, dads and children in the Redlands will still be able to catch a fish and have family fun on the Bay.

"This decision supports tourism and small business in the Redlands by saving such time-sensitive events that provide fun and healthy activities for local families and attract people and revenue to the Redlands.

"To#break up the concentration of public holidays in April-May by moving the Labour Day holiday to the second half of the year will bring Queensland into line with#other States such as New South Wales, South Australia and the ACT.

If you have a story of how keeping the Queens birthday weekend in June will help fishers, I would be interested to hear about it. And yes, I am still here and fighting for fishing rights ...

Please correct me if I have this wrong Mark, but you've made the decision, now your looking for more reasons for making that decision.

    Gotta love your front buddy.
Good to hear from you Mike. I can always count on you. I love your quote about rec fishing licences. Thank you for promoting the LNP's fishing policy. As you will note we don't have a licence fee. And as I have said, i would only support one if Qld's rec fishers called for it.

Being a (for the next couple of weeks) public servant, public holidays wont be of much concern to me Mark, I'll have every day off to go fishing thanks to you..

Actually you said "the LNP ruled out rec fishing licences" Mark, and I'm sure you know how and why they ended up back on the table a couple of months ago. And I don't mind promoting your rec licence quote at all, that's why I was repeatedly emailing your Ausfish promise to both Fisheries and your bosses in the LNP as soon as word leaked out .
So realy you should be happy you can still bring about outcomes in Fisheries even though you didn't get the gig.

Seriously though, I wouldn't have an issue with the change as it brings us in line with other states but why would you be looking for more reasons for the change after you've (the LNP) already have made up your mind? And fishing related at that?

    Cheers

Does not say much about your constituents Mark

WOW..now it appears decisions affecting the entire State are based on a Redlands fishing comp???

I reckon you should push for a couple of public holidays in September for the people attending the Agnes M&G.

"former government"..those two words should be struck from your vocabulary Mark...YOU mob are the Govt now..what went before is irrelevant.

If we are to be inline with other States, are we getting a Melbourne Cup holiday..Melbourne has one!!!!

Bank Holiday ? NSW has one!!

Are you going to align school hokidays also?

If not then the statement about being inline with the other States is just some more political jibberish.

    Hi Mark,
Why don't you(or McVeigh) decree one line /one hook in Green Zones , during the Queens B'Day - Fishing Challenge period.
That'd be a good news story c/- mums, dads and children

Re: Fishers welcome Queens birthday holiday decision

Certainly need a thick skin for politics

Mark the holiday in June is good for me - snapper time - shame about the limits, but they don't affect me that often as I am not that good a fisho even though I think I am once I have boated two or three.

There are plenty of other issues we hope to hear favourably from you in the future as mentioned by others in relation to green zones, mega trawlers and pillage and plunder beach netting.

Some things you may see as national rather than local but yes they do impact locally as the sea knows no boundarys and the fish no borders.

Keep at it and let us know how you go.

Thanks for any, and all, positive contributions you make.
    Cheers

Re: Fishers welcome Queens birthday holiday decision

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for the tremendous news and I'm sure that the vast majority of Queenslanders will appreciate the change as the way it was with so many public holidays back to back with nothing later in the year was crazy.

Thanks also for continuing the fight for our fishing rights and on that note I would encourage you to read the post entitled "And then there was none" found in the General fishing section of Ausfish as it seems in other breaking news that this current State Government is going to do nothing about the extreme demise of fish stocks via pro netting our South East Queensland beaches.

This is a tragedy for tourism, recreational fishing and means our kids in future generations will have nothing left
to fish for at days like the Offshore Fishing challenge in years ahead. If you can help in any way Mark please read Lindsay Dines (Slider) post and 'consider', as many of us were really hoping for some 'can do action' around this.

I get that its a very tough gig to be in a role like yours and appreciate you may well have tried to do something but please for the sake of future generations.....

    Have another go!

    Thanks Mark,

    Mal

Re: Fishers welcome Queens birthday holiday decision

Am I missing something or is this a bit of self praise by a politician for his party's having made a decision to not do something?

May I also congratulate the LNP for not closing down the Story Bridge and for not emptying the Brisbane River and for not building a bridge to Moreton Island?

Sheesh! Some pollies are destined to be back benchers for ever if that is what they call an achievement worthy of issuing a virtual media release about.

Hey Mark, I was planning a fishing trip next year on Labor Day, can we get it changed back to May??

Also good to see the changes "can do" is doing to the public(servants) holidays next year, for 20000 of them he giving them lots more "holidays"

question, with 20000 employees off govt books and on Centrelinks , are we better off?? (btw this is a legit q, I really would like to know)

hi mark, a good decision made by the LNP, welcomed by the chamber of commerce, and flamed by the unions as an erosion of worker's rights. Whilst i agree that it's very nice for the redlands fishing comp and also cannot see anywhere that you have said the holiday was retained purely for the comp (as has been suggested on here), man alive that press release style post on here is a pretty corny piece of work. C'mon mate you can do better than that.

That's a pretty long bow to draw spin-wise to link this in for fishers
By that logic I'm surprised that you haven't spun up that of the 20k+ public servants to lose jobs, the fishers among them are thankul they now have more time for fishing....or that the clamp down on public clinician over-time hours means that the fishers among them are thankful for the extra time to go fishing (you could spin it even further to say those people that now can't see a public health worker and are also fishers are thankful, they can now go fishing instead of sitting around waiting for something flippant like healthcare). You can spin anything you like and I'm pretty sure you just did
