Looking for a dude.
Who's the guy on here that does/used to take kids out fishing with a non for profit organisation that wanted some second hand gear a while back?
I'm doing a bit of a clean out of all my gear and there is a bit of brand new tackle I'll never use and some used rods and reels that could be useful to a group like that or does anyone else know of another non for profit organisation that could use this kind of stuff?
It's a waste just taking it to the tip if there are less fortunate kids out there that could use it to have a bit of fun. We've all got stuff out there we're never going to use again so if someone knows of such a group to donate it to, post it up so it doesn't just end up in a bin.

I never thought that the words smartarse and Philanthropist would be used in the same sentence.
Well done Anthony.

Re: Looking for a dude.
Hey guys,
Yes I am the guy who works with 'at risk' boys through the SU Qld Connect Program
See http://www.su-connect.org.au/
I have written a few articles requesting some gear for them and people were very generous in supporting the boys who I have now worked with for just over 6 months doing Beach Camps at DI Point, Canoeing Camps down the Brissie River (42 ks paddle from Twin Bridges Fernvale to Kholo Bridge) and starting on Bushwalk camps in Nth NSW soon.
The boys have been really enjoying the inclusion of fishing thanks to many of you guys and I'd love to post pics but as you can understand its a bit tricky with all of the laws around privacy/images etc these days.
Unfortunately our Canoeing trips have been hard on gear and claiming about 1-2 rods/reels per trip due to capsizes, trees, etc etc. so am very keen on chasing some 2000 size eggbeater/spinning reels and matching 6 foot rods. This size gear is my most well used outfit all round and anyone with such I'd love to hear from as I would from anyone who could help me source such direct from tackle companies as I'd love to get some graphite rods to teach them plastics fishing. I just need the pro's to stop netting/hammering DI Lagoon so we can have success there again.
Apart from that I am keen on getting any donations of fishing gear as we use it all and most of it cops a hiding and thus doesn't last even though I do my best to teach them how to look after it.
Finally, soon we will be taking the boys on their last camp in term 4 onwards (High schoolers only) which is a work experience camp on a prawning farm on Brissy's southside so anyone with a spare cast net would be most appreciated.
Due to the amount of rain we have seen and the fact the boys never bring one I am also keen to target some rain coats we can have on-hand for them (as they 'never bring them'!!) and if anyone has any sand pegs, adjustable tent poles or camp fire related camping/cooking gear some more would not go astray.
Anyway thanks for the offer Muddy Toes and Jakers 69 and I will PM you both today.
Mal

Re: Looking for a dude.
Alright guys.....if anyone has some stuff I can get it Malby's place in a couple of weeks if you can get it to Redland Bay.
Either that or just arrange it with Malby.
It's a great thing he does with these kids so lets support him and his worthy cause.

Re: Looking for a dude.
Good to hear things are still going strong Mal, was a bit worried with Can Do wielding the axe, a lot of good programs are disappearing fast!

Re: Looking for a dude.
Thanks Feral and great to hear from you again.
As it turns out Connect has never received 'any' government handouts which is both good and bad I guess.
Funding for our program is all private coming mainly from 2 sources:
1. The RSL
2. Build the future foundation http://buildthefuture.org.au/
From the Build the future web site:
This support is imperative in helping young people build a better future for themselves, and make the often difficult journey to getting their life on track.
Build the Future financially supports SU QLD’s at-risk youth programs through a variety of avenues, including the Build the Future Dinner, an annual Golf Day and the House of Hope. Funds raised through these projects ensure that SU QLD’s at-risk youth programs can continue to operate and expand, bringing hope to Queensland’s younger generation.“Build the Future is making a real difference with at-risk youth, giving them hope for a fresh start and a better go at life. It’s an investment that is literally saving lives, and building the trade force of tomorrow, today.“
Tim Mander
Former NRL Grand Final Referee
For anyone wanting to support the program 'Build the future' are running their special annual cocktail night this Friday the 24th of August at
Venue: Moda Portside – Level 2, Portside Wharf, 39 Hercules Street, Hamilton QLD 4007
Go to: http://buildthefuture.org.au/events/cocktail-function/ for full info.
We would greatly appreciate any support.
All the best,
Mal
