Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
i'd like to clarify that i don't know for sure if this is what has happened in this instance, but it certainly looks/sounds suss and like the saying goes "if it looks like a turd and smells like a turd ........ it's quite possibly a turd"
yeah littleskipper, the loopholes that allow someone to walk away from a business leaving massive debts to creditors (that can be just normal people like you or I), only to set up another business with or without the assistance of a family member, just plain suck.

Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
My limited understanding is that Bruce Cunningham was the founder of the original buisness and his brother Ian an employee. Quite possibly Ian Cunningham, who was the Operations Manager, wasn't a company director and thus not liable for any outstanding debts. Therefore, free to open up a business down the road - even using his own name.
I wish him all the best with the new venture!
Has anyone actually heard or read anything about creditors being out of pocket due to the demise of Cunninghams Marine??![]()
Cheers,
Jim

Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
That's a good point boat hog. It just has that stigma attached to it, on how easy it is to go bust and reopen in another family members name.I have seen that happen with a customer in my business owing over 100000, and now his wife owns it.
I can easly see how so many people can come to these conclusions.

Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
Thanks Troy. Didn't know that. So now we have 2 approved merc dealers in the area. The ones in duff field rd must be a bit pissed off with another merc dealer approved just up the rd.

Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
hi boat hog, i haven't heard of creditors being out of pocket and that's why i wanted to clarify that i don't know any of the details of what has happened in this instance.
however ....................... if the original business was solvent and didn't owe any creditors any money it didn't have, it surely wouldn't have been placed into the hands of the receivers .................. would it?
i still go back to my statement "if it looks like a turd ..............."

Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
The business was placed into receivership. Assests were sold off to pay creditors. Has anyone heard any sob stories about this? You know the ones, "I can't afford to pay my rent/mortgage/groceries/employees etc because Cunninghams owed me thousands ... ". There's no victims here that I know of except for the Cunningham family and their employees who lost out due to a massive downturn in the marine sector.
Stejcraft, Trailfin and Bluefin boats. Didn't the former Cunninghams Marine deal in these boats? Outboard motors too? Surely, there was no big stink left after the receivership otherwise these manufacturers wouldn't have been keen to sign up for another go?!
I see no turd, I smell no turd ....
Cheers,
Jim

Re: Cunninghams Marine back in business
Yeah Jim you would think there would have been but this is not the case I guess. I am not going to knock Ian for giving it a go or blame him for the other business going belly up. From what I can make of this looking at it from an
outsider perspective is that Cunninghams got too Big they had way too many brands there so in turn there floor plan costs would have been massive and just became unsustainable in the end. The bigger range of boats there just were not selling. I remember when I was looking around for a boat Ian put together a pretty good deal together of a Stejcraft 6500WA BMT 150 opti hummingbird sounder electric brakes on trailer rocket launchers and full covers all saftey gear twin batteries for 48k as tempting as this was the fact the hull was made in China still did not sit right with me so I passed on it but still in all Ian will do a pretty good deal on a boat. Good Luck to him I reckon for giving it another go.![]()
