Cruise Craft Outsider 510
Hi Guys,
I have just purchased one of these.
Does anyone have experience with repowering this hull (same as all C/C 5.06m plus pod) with a 4 stroke?
I've just found and purchased a Suzuki 115, but am a little concerned about the 40kg extra weight compared to the old Johnson on it.

Hi Darren,
I think from memory that boat came out when CC bought out their 580 Series and that was quite a few years ago. Me thinks a 115hp Suzy may bit on the heavy side. When that boat ca,me out Four Strokes weren'y even in the vocabulary.
My two bobs worth.

Re: Cruise Craft Outsider 510
Hi Darren
Theres probably 30 odd kgs difference ie 167 vs 189 or there abouts but you drop the oil bottle too so 40 is probably the upper end of it.
Have you considered sticking Lencos or Bennets on it to get a little more lift from low speed and up?
How goes the estate game?
Cheers

I got a F115 on my 520 Sig and its close to being too heavy although within max weight so I think you're right being concerned BB.
No point making things idiot proof, they'll only make a better idiot.

Re: Cruise Craft Outsider 510
Hey Guys,
Thanks. Yes, this boat was released at the same time as the 580 Outsider.
I've seen a pic of one with a 140 Suzuki on the plane, so I know it's been done by someone.
Pete, I've got this project at minimal cost to keep, so I don't want to sink an extra 1k into tabs unless I definately have to.
Does anyone know someone who has owned this same boat which may be able to help?

Your best bet would be to get in touch with Nathan or Justin nicholls at Cruisecraft. They would be sure to steer you in the right direction.

Re: Cruise Craft Outsider 510
Hi Darren...... (same as all C/C 5.06m plus pod) ......
I used to own a Regal 5.06 Half Cabin. It was the 1986 version with the smooth (not clinker) sides. I had a Evinrude V4 120hp VRO and a 15hp Aux on the back of it. So a reasonable amount of weight on its bum. It went OK for me.
The new owner repowered it with a 115hp 4 stroke Suzuki (Johnson) and claimed it was too stern heavy. But that may have been a set up problem. Im not sure how much tweaking he did with engine heights, props and weight distribution. Im not sure if dual batteries at the stern would be a good idea with the 4 stroke either.
Will PM you some links to Fishnet showing my old boat and comments by the new owner.
cheers

Re: Cruise Craft Outsider 510
Hi Darren,
I own the same boat and replaced a 140kg Johnson 115(with trim plate) with an Optimax 115 180kg. This made a fair change to the boat performance, for the worse. Without a permatrim fitted she would not not perform, with the permatrim she is quite good however tends to porpoise at times, possible due to the donk been too heavy. At stand still she is stern heavy. Given that motor pod design any small change in weight will have a fair impact on the centre of gravity of the boat.
I reckon a yammy 90 would have been better given the reduced weight.
I am contemplating increasing the buoyancy by 50-100 kg in the stern and will start a new thread on that.
cheers

Re: Cruise Craft Outsider 510
I own a 510 Outsider ... and looked VERY seriously at re-powering it with a 4 banger (I mostly troll).
I decided against it ... but only because i didnt want to over capitalise on it ! Sounds like your situation is different ?
What I did discover in the process is ...
- 510 Outsiders are naturally bum heavy (as mentioned) and a heavier motor will make it worse (photo's attached BEFORE 2nd battery, live bait tank).
- The lightest 4 stroke 115hp is the Mercury (181kgs) ... not that much more than the current 2-stroke Jono 115hp (160kgs) but may be noticed as its already low at the rear.
- I decided to weight the nose down to fix the issue ... I plumbed a 75lt New Era fuel tank in the front cabin ... fitted perfectly. Kevin Nichols from Cruise Craft (really helpfull guy, still supporting a boat he sold 20yrs ago) suggested a bag or three of black iron sand in the front hatch. Proberbly would work too .. the fuel tank sorted me out. Actually made the boat perform better in the slop by allowing me to punch through it due to the greater weight and nose position!
- Don't choose a 90hp four stroke. It will be under powered for sure. The 510 outsider is a heavy boat for its size (640kg dry minus outboard). With full fuel, beers, ice, 3 big guys, beers, 2nd battery (did I menton beers) and gear ... she can be slow off the mark ... ok at speed ... but a 90hp stroke wont cut it IMO. 115HP four stroke as a minimum. Proberbly a Merc as the Yammy and Suzi are heavier again ... forget the Honda (same motor as in my car ... WAY too heavy).
They are a fantastic small glass boat, well made, well mannered, good lay out, tough and safe. Repower it for sure with the above in mind ... and show us the photo's. Good luck !

Re: Cruise Craft Outsider 510
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
I have now completed the repower, along with a pretty serious clean up and change of the boat.
I fitted a 2008 Suzuki 115hp 4 stroke, and i'm very happy with the results.
I also spoke to Kevin Nicholls before the change, and he was pretty helpful. I replaced the fuel tank that was in the boat with a 100L, and moved it as far forward as I could in the under floor compartment (it was across the transom).
On the 1st Sea trial, i was very happy with the performance, but did notice a bit of porpoising, which I also found when testing the boat with the old 115hp Johnson. The Johnson cavitated like there was no tomorrow also and couldn't trim without blow out, so I dropped the Zuk down one hole.
Next trip out I fitted an SE Sport foil, and i'm now very happy with it. I can't seem to get any porpoising, and I can now trim out as it should which I couldn't on the sea trial.
I gained 4 knots top end over the old Johnson (36 knots top end now), and out of the hole is as good if not better.
I'm also running a 19" prop and hitting the rev limiter pretty easily ATM, so I should see a further lift in top end running a 21" like I plan.
I have done a pretty comprehensive rebuild/clean up, which I will document here once i'm 100% finished. I've just got a new bimini/clears to go on and i'm all done.
That will be completed over the next few weeks, and i'm hoping this one will be a keeper.
Regards
Darren
